Asterisk knee braces have migrated from the track to the Mountain for the winter season. Getting their start keeping the knees in one piece for Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart and most of the major motocross and supercross athletes, they have become as important a piece of equipment as your helmet for moto participants from beginners to pro level racers. Jim Castillo originally developed the CTI prescription brace and updated the design with the Asterisk Cell. His intension was simply to bolster the fragile knee joint before you need to see a surgeon. The updates are extensive and led to the brace becoming universally accepted because you don’t notice them after a few uses until you need them. The dual pivot floating hinge allows the lower leg to move through its full range of natural motion. If you have worn any other brace prior, this is the first improvement you will notice. Tele skiers will find the combination of the knee cup and mobility key. Skiercross and boardercross participants also take advantage of the protection and leverage offered. Extension range of motion can be set to each individual as well the upper and lower cuff volume can be adjusted for a custom fit. The rear webbing and custom fit pads also help you tailor the brace for a perfect sit. The Cell is super low profile and fits under any pant. If your rocking the stretch pants still, this could be the reason to upgrade from the spandex. The Cell is the only brace available on the market that captures the tibia and in combination with the tether system, attaches the braces to your boots or bindings helping to slow down rotation of the leg reducing the chance of an ACL tear due to twisting. This is what makes the Cell perfect match for snow sports because of the forces being applied by skis and boards. Riders will appreciate the protection offered to the MCL and LCL as well.
These are a long term purchase and carry a life time refurbishment for $150.00 as long as the frames are in tack. The braces retail for $599, about $10,000 less than a knee fix. Skiers like Glen Plake, Daron Rahlves, Shane Mc Conkey, Kent Kreitler, have all been wearing the braces for quite a while now or unfortunately, if you ask a few of them, after a surgery.
