Softball Narrowly Misses in non-win
The Porters Softball Juggernaut, playing without a number of our regulars, managed a valiant effort last night against the #1 ranked team in the Tahoe City D League. "D", by the way, stands for 'determination' -a quality our team has- and not, as many assume, for "drunken", which we may or may not have been by complete coincidence.
Playing against the verbally colorful and "cleats-up" style of our opponent, Porters fought hard throughout. The line-up and positions were creative, as we were missing our heart and soul, Kasey Weiss (anniversary- congrats), as well as Big B (college), Finn (wedding), Alicia & Mark (wedding), Nate (Sac), Yonto (home), Segal (philandering), and Kevin (family, or Hot August Nights). Porters played great defense and limited our opponent to a few measly runs each inning, which seemed to frustrate them greatly. Unfortunately, Porters was also limited to a few measly runs each inning, though not for lack of trying. Jason managed to hit to their very-capable shortstop, yet somehow turn it into an in-the-park HR. Later, Nicky B. would not settle for a double, and simply decided to keep running until he reached home, which he did. Nice job Nicky B! Nicky B. is in many ways unstoppable force on the field, especially when it comes to bad language. At one point the Ump asked him to stop the swearing, and Nick earnestly replied "Sorry, I'm from New York and it's part of who I am. I can't f**king help it."
The game was tied 8-8 at the end of regulation. Porters scored in extra time, but ultimately failed to hold off the other team in their last at bats. The 10-11 final score says it all: close but no cigar, amigo. Still, fun was had and we managed to win ‘the game behind the game’: Not every team walks off the field with a “W” every night, but we were one team that could walk off the field with our dignity intact, and that also says something.
Until next week my friends.
