Well I’m finally back home from Argentina and I got to admit it feels great. Two months in South America was definitely one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, but it was a long trip. I can’t explain how much fun I had at SASS (South America Snow Sessions http://www.sasnowsessions.com/) this summer. From waist deep powder days to metal Mondays, the trip couldn’t have been any better. The people in Argentina were very friendly and the campers/staff were awesome. If anyone has ever been to Argentina they probably know how great the meat is there. I seriously had steak everyday and never hesitated to eat anything else. It was a blast to live the Argentinean lifestyle for a couple months.
Cerro Cathedral (the mountain in Bariloche) is one of the most interesting resorts that I have ever ridden. There are huge open bowls, big cliffs, and very tight trees. The ski patrol down there doesn’t really care what you do or where you go, so it can be very dangerous at times. They don’t mark any obstacles like they do in the states, so you have to be very aware of where you are going. There were so many avalanches while I was there, which was pretty scary, but definitely very eye opening. The SASS guides Alex Hunt and Skyler Holgate definitely taught me a lot about backcountry safety, which kept me safe while I was there.
The last week in South America a few of the coaches and I decided to head down to Buenos Aires and check out the city. It was a lot different than the small ski town we were staying in for so long, but it felt good to change it up. We walked around the city, met cool people, ate good food, and partied a shit load. One of the coolest things we did while in BA was take a huge boat to Uruguay (a country next to Argentina). After an hour boat ride, we arrived in Colonia. We rented scooters, checked out the city, and cruised up and down the coast all day. It was absolutely one of the highlights of my whole trip.
I’ve got to say to anyone who is considering going to a summer camp next year, I would highly recommend going to SASS. There is no other summer camp that offers waist deep powder, huge backcountry jumps, a sick park, and great food (in the summer). It might seem like a long journey all the way to South America to snowboard, but it is more than worth it. It will be one of the best experiences you will have and can be very life changing.
I just want to thank all my sponsors: Billabong, 32, Rossignol, Oakley, Porters, TSST and Skelestar for giving me all their support. I also would like to thank my dad for hooking it up while I was there and the whole SASS staff!
