Backcountry skiing near Mammoth. Couloirs are Coul

Yesterday was a beautiful day in the high Sierra.  With some coverage in the higher elevations of some of the peaks in the Mammoth area my friend Ming and I took advantage of our current high pressure and knocked a classic descent off of both our lists.  Ming is fired up to ski some high Sierra lines before he heads back up to Cordova, AK to work for the Points North Heli crew.  If you've ever been to Mammoth you've probably looked right at the Bloody Couloir.  It sits on the Northeast face of Bloody Mountain and stares down anyone driving south on 395.  The mountain isn't exceptionally large for High Sierra standards, but generally the rough dirt road that gets you close to the bottom of it is choked with snow and impassable adding miles and thousands of vertical feet to the climb.  Currently the road is clear and we were able to drive almost to the bottom of it, which I would only recommend if you have at least 8 inches of clearance and 4 wheel drive.  The coverage in the chute is quite thin, and the snow is certainly a bit wind affected, but what else did I have to do yesterday, sit around and be pissed about our lack of snow?
After about three hours of climbing Ming and I reached the summit.  The surrounding peaks have some decent coverage in places, but its really pockety, mostly on north faces and up high. Looks a lot more like winter there than it does in Tahoe, thats for sure.  Here we are on the summit, getting ready to drop in on the super funk wind board, almost pow in some places but not really, and steep.
Here's a shot of Ming slaying the lower part of the couloir, and looking out for rocks and punchy wind affected snow.  Nice form though.
This is what we saw from the top of Bloody, looks like it almost has enough coverage to go.  Red Slate Couloir is something that I've never skied, who knows, maybe this year.
Anyway, its not all bad out there.  Even though the snow conditions weren't ideal, we got to spend the day out in the mountains, and that was what really mattered.
