blackwood fun, sans pow

Well, Field Productions arrived to Tahoe for a planned lengthy stay for working on their 2009 ski movie release. We wandered up Blackwood Canyon for some "location scouting" and to see just how useless they would be on snowmobiles. We noticed that the sunken meadows area would be good for filming with a small reset and then continued to 4th of July bowl. Playing it safe we opted to leave the sleds at the bottom and boot pack up. I brought a parachute and did my first ski base of the year. The damn thing just looked low as ever, I was wondering "am I inthe right spot?" "Is this really gonna work?" "Could the mountain have shrunk?"

I went hand held and threw right away. I dont get much in the way of style points, we normally put our leg straps under our pants so we dont get that harness-pants-all-hiked-up and ski-racer-boot look, but i failed to do so yesterday. All in all, it was nice to get my first ski base of the year over and it is pretty fun to ski off of a 170 foot cliff. It is big air and you feel some time in the air even if you do just ski off and open your chute ASAP. The 4th of July huck is pretty low, the parachute has more or less, just enough room to open up. Seems hard to believe that we do flips off of there, but the difference is sometimes the in run is faster, or you tow in, sometimes the lip is flatter or you build a small kicker and that is what gives you that extra air time to squeak out a trick. This years goal is to make a nice kicker beneath the landing of the ski base so you can do ski base flip, land in the in run of a booter cutaway your parachute and hit the jump for another trick.
