Tahoe's Bears are Back!!

I’ve seen two black bears in the past 3 days, which means Tahoe’s bears are coming out of their winter snooze and back into our lives. One was invading an un-locked dumpster in Truckee this weekend, and the other was sprinting across 89 this morning near Squaw and narrowly missed getting hit by a car.

Whether you live in Tahoe or are coming for a quick visit, you need to know how to live around bears in order to protect them and yourselves. With a little bit of knowledge and perspective, humans can drastically reduce the chances of unnecessary conflicts with bears.

The Bear League is one great organization that passionately advocates for bears by helping to teach humans to live around them. Check out their website:
http://www.savebears.org/

If you aren’t going to check that out, here are a few basic things:

-Anytime you see a bear near civilization or people (at a house, in town, a dumpster), immediately call the police or the Bear League at (530) 525-PAWS (7297). Or if it’s safe for the humans around, try to scare it away with loud noises but don’t put yourself in harm’s way. We gotta help re-condition the bears to be afraid of humans, which isn’t easy.

-all garbage must be placed in ‘bear boxes’, period.

-Bears are naturally shy but can act aggressively towards people when they feel cornered. They look cute but they are wild animals with giant muscles are sharp teeth and claws- even though they live around people, they don’t know how to interpret our actions.

-Don’t get between Mama and her cubs. Not cool yo.
