2009 Reno Balloon Races
Incase you missed or were wondering why there were so many balloon in reno. Here is what was happening this weekend in Reno...
The Great Reno Balloon Race is the largest free hot air ballooning event in the Nation. During three days in early September, you can look up into the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about. From its humble beginnings in 1982 with just 20 balloons, The Great Reno Balloon Race has taken flight with more than 100 balloons each year. Taking place just a few miles north of downtown Reno, the event enchants both young and old with its vibrant colors and inspiring music. The Balloon Race has won many awards over the years including 'Best Special Event in Reno' and 'Best Special Event in Northern Nevada.' With an average of 140,000 spectators attending the event each year, the number of lives touched by the beautiful spectacle continues to rise just like the balloons themselves.
Quick break down. Wake up at 3:30am, park by 4:30am at Lawlor Events Center, walk up to Rancho San Rafael Park and just look for the glowing balls in the field. By getting there early enough you can be there for what they call the dawn patrol. With 4 or 5 balloons going up at first light. Then around 7am the mass ascension begins with nearly 100 balloons all taking to the sky. Any view is a good view and the kids can even get pretty close to the balloons themselves.
This a great event for the family if you can wrangle up the troops that early in the morning. Plus they call it the "World's Largest Pajama Party" so you do not need to worry about getting the monkeys all gussied up.
Plain and simply one of the coolest free events you could ever take the family to in the Reno area.
