2011 Burton Sherlock Review

Burton describes the new 2011 Sherlock as “Freestyle fun meets deep snow float”.

The Sherlock Feature list -

Gondola package – Setting the industry benchmark for performance with boards that are lighter, faster and stronger for more air, quicker turns and more fun no matter the terrain or conditions. Also the Springloaded

Flying V – Take flight with V-rocker’s next evolution. A premium blend of camber and rocker performance, Flying V offers the best of both worlds. Rocker overall including between and outside the feet, enhances playfulness and float through pow. Underneath you feet, subtle camber zones combine with frostbite Edges, EGD and the channel to focus edge control for crisp snap, added pop and power through turns.

Shape – Twin like
Flex – Directional

With those four features alone Burton creates a true snowboard masterpiece but they forget to mention the most important part of this snowboard, the Turning radius. That is what makes this board a potential quiver killer. All of the other Men’s reverse camber boards have a Turn radius of 7 meters plus but the Sherlock keeps it tight but a 6 meter turn radius. What’s does this mean you might ask? This allows the board to perform much better in steeper more technical lines, carve down the hill better and feel just that much more responsive under your feet. The board has a middle of the road flex of 5 which really lends itself to park riding as well as a fun playful feel that just wanted to butter and play on the entire mountain, but the fun doesn’t stop, the board loves making effortless turns in off piste conditions. I rode the 154 and was very surprised at how stable the board felt shorter size but still had amazing response and feedback the entire ride. Everyone I spoke with have as much fun on this board as I did, what Burton has done so successfully with this board versus all the other reverse camber models they are offering for 2011 is the tighter turn radius, take one out and allow the Sherlock to blow your mind.

I've been riding this board for the last 3 months. It's basically the next evolution of the Flying V Ltd. Here are the differences: a slightly narrower waist, slightly stiffer flex, more elipical tip and tail, directional flex. The FVL chattered a bit at speed... so they stiffened it from 4 to 5. The tip and tail are also slightly diff shape, riding better in pow and crud now with no negative effect on park performance. For those who like to cruise groomed and off piste runs, be playful on varied terrain including steeps, pow, crud... and those who like trees... this is it. I would like to see them upgrade the top sheet to provide a lighter version for quicker reaction times in glades. Hopefully this version will be on S13 or in the 2012 line.
