Big Changes

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

August 25, 2010  9:08pm

Happy Birthday Bro!

Active weather pattern in the short->medium term as deep low pressure is progged to drop out of the GofAK down the PacNW coast into CA over the course of Friday->Monday.  In the Sierra, height/ temperature anomalies of -3 to -5 standard deviations are expected with this trough passage.  WTF?  Basically expect temps on Sunday to be 30-40F cooler than today.  NWS Reno has issued a special weather statement containing language to prepare drivers in the higher Sierra terrain for winter like-conditions.

Yep. Snow possible above 9Gs on Sunday!  August!  You got it.  Starting early.

Forecast reads:

Thursday- increasing winds, slightly cooler temps (5-10F) with the chance of thunderstorms, but mostly South of Lake Tahoe.  Ridge winds to WSW 60mph+

Friday- Windy- Ridge gusts decreasing a bit but still windy.  Cooler.  High temps in the 70s.

Saturday- Windy and cooler.  Chance of thunderstorms.  Highs at lake level in the 60s.  Highs @ elevation in the low 50s.  Chance of flurries at the highest elevations.

Sunday- Colder.  Highs at lake level in the 50s with 40s/30s at elevation.  Freezing level looks to be about 9000', so Mt Rose, Freel Peak and Round Top very well could see a dusting of snow by Monday morning.  Continued breezy.

Monday morning lows in Truckee will be in the 20s, with 30s around the lake.  Expect a solid freeze in Truckee both Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Trough shifts east on Monday and by Tuesday temps start to rebound to climo.

The strength of this low pressure is surprising.  This is truly uncommon.  Going to be a fun weekend!

First snowfall of the season

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

August 22, 2010  7:50pm

The first snowfall of the season fell this past Friday night.  Not in Tahoe, but in Crested Butte, CO.  A dusting of the white graced the upper peaks in Southwestern Colorado much to skiers delight.

A windy and somewhat fall-like weekend comes to a close as temps will warm considerably for the middle part of the upcoming week.  Daytime highs will be above normal Wednesday as high pressure becomes well established.  Daytime highs in the upper 80s for Tuesday/ Wednesday, mid 80s Thursday.  Morning lows will be in the 30s (maybe below freezing Monday morning in Truckee) to the 50s @ elevation.

Looking ahead to next weekend, a strong trough of low pressure is forecast to drop South out of Canada along the PacNW coast.  A sure bet is increased winds Friday/ Saturday with possible fall like conditions as we get into Sunday/ Monday.  The possibility exists for much below normal temps to end the week/ start the following week.  Right now next Sunday's temps look to top out in the mid 60s for Truckee and low 50s @ 8k.  We are 5-7 days out now, so stay tuned.  The CPC 6-10day and 8-14day outlooks both show below normal temps.

As of tonight there are officially 29days of summer left.  Come Sept. 21 we will be full throttle into the coming winter.  Pow days are not too far off now.  Best case scenario we could be skiing/ riding in 6 weeks.  Fingers crossed....

The trend gets interupted

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

August 16, 2010 9:00pm

I am glad to say that there is some weather to talk about.  Finally!  This endless period of sunny skies and perfect temps is starting to wear on me.  I don't know how many more days I can go on dealing with such epic weather.  Alas, low pressure in the Eastern Pacific!  A closed low is moving towards the Southern Oregon Coast and will continue inland along the OR/CA/NV/ID boarders.  For Tahoe this means pretty gusty, dry winds and no precip.  We will see temps drop to climo for the rest of the week.  Cumulus build ups with a stiff afternoon zephyr.  Tuesday and Wednesday will be exceptionally breezy with ridge winds hitting 60-70mph Tuesday evening/ night and a shortwave passes over the Sierra.  Temps will cool back to the upper 70s in Truckee, mid 60s @ elevation.

Look for winds to return Friday as another shortwave cruises over the Sierra.

Click here for the graphical Lake Tahoe forecast.

La Nina is forecast to be moderate/ strong for this winter.  Regardless, current discussion is how low temps might get for long periods this coming winter.  Look for some storms to drop snow levels redonkulously low bringing on the uber blower!  Might not be a bad ideal to get some extra wood and maybe someone special to shack up with in order to keep warm this winter.

Stay The Course

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

August 2, 2010 7:35pm

A continuation of the most spectacular weather will continue through this next week and for the foreseeable future.  Daytime highs in the mid 80s, morning lows ranging from the 30s in the colder valleys to mid 40s around the lake.  Mid slope and up temps will stay in the 50s for morning lows, 70F for a high at 8k.  Truckee is getting into a pattern of 45-50F temperature swings between sun up and 4-5pm.  This is a true sign of late summer very dry air.  Can't get much better than this!

Have you heard the hype now beginning about this upcoming winter?  Little ice age?  Cold as cold can be?  How cold is that?  Darn cold.  More to come on this up coming winter's projections.  It has been a rather mild summer, eh?

253

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

July 11, 2010 9:49am

253.  That is the number of lightning strikes in the Tahoe National Forest this past week due to an abundance of thunderstorms.  All in all not too many problems with wildfires because of wetting rains and vegetation that is relatively moist due to the very wet spring.  The low pressure that has been responsible for these storms is currently sitting off the Central California Coast, which today will bring thunderstorm activity to Southern CA, the mountains of Inyo County, and most of the Southern Sierra.

Looking to this week, warm temps on tap as a monster ridge of high pressure builds North from the four corners.  Temps will remain much above average with highs nearing 90F in Truckee and the century mark in Reno.  Expect very little in the way of clouds this week.  Winds will be building from the West each afternoon due to the typical summertime zephyr.  Perfect weather for a little wakesurf/ board/ water ski in the morning and a mountain bike ride in the afternoon.  I hear Squaw Valley is going to reopen its mountain bike park this week for the first time since the late 1990's.  Is about time!  Cable car service to the top and long descents back to the cold bevies in the lot.  Not bad.  I also heard that commercial rafting from TC-> River Ranch will be open this week.

Tahoe is at its summertime finest right now.  Get up.  Get out.  Enjoy!

Skiing on the 4th?

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

July 5, 2010 8:12am

You Betcha!  The famed 4th of July Chutes living up to their name.  Great day to get out.  Heck, bring the dogs and go for a morning ski high above Lake Tahoe.

7/4/2010 Everybody Rides

7/4/2010 4th of July Chutes

Wow there is some texture on that corn, but it's July and it's turns.  Not bad for a 30min walk from the car.

After a beautiful 4th of July weekend the perfect weather will continue with high temps hitting the mid 80s in Truckee, near 70F@8k.  Morning low temps will be in the 40s in the colder valleys with 50s for lows at elevation.  Mostly clear skies will persist all week, with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms Tues->Fri.  Expect the usual afternoon zephyr.

Click here for the graphical Lake Tahoe forecast.

After a very snow covered start to June around the Tahoe Basin, recent heat has provided for major melting.  Hiking and mountain biking in the higher elevations are becoming less of a snow filled hassle.  Only the highest sheltered areas still remain covered with snow.  The exception is Desolation Wilderness where an abundance of snow still exists for early July.  Wild flowers are starting to bloom throughout the region and will only get better as the summer growing season is roughly one month behind normal.

Celebrate Your Independence

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

June 29, 2010 7:55pm

Summer is in full swing here in Tahoe.  Absolutely perfect weather.  Warm days, cool nights.  No clouds.  Can't get much better than this.

As we make the turn into July and the festivus Fourth, Mother Nature will cooperate delivering a dry and stable airmass through Saturday.  High temps in the low 80s in Truckee, upper 70s on Big Blue, with upper 60s @ 8k.  Afternoon breezes are standard.  Morning lows will bottom out around 40F in the colder spots.  On Sunday the chance for cumulus development returns in the afternoon.  Afternoon convection will be possible through midweek next week.  At this point in time Monday is looking good for some afternoon thunderstorms.

Enjoy!  Play safe.

Mojo? fixed.....

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

June 6, 2010 9pm

Summer has finally showed up here in the Sierra.  Temps a little over a week ago were barely in the 40s with new snow each day.  Fast forward to this weekend and 70F temps abound as the sun is shining.  Summer solstice is just around the corner, good thing it finally feels like it should in June.  Just remember, by June 22 the days start getting shorter again, with winter making its way back.

Great weather to continue for one more day before a trough once again drops from the GulfAK into the PacNW.  Winds will once again increase on Monday and stay breezy through the remainder of the week.  Cold front should swing through Wednesday dropping temps 15F from today's highs by Friday.  So expect highs near 60F in Truckee by late in the week.  We will see a good amount of clouds this week too.  A few showers cannot be ruled out along the crest, but most of the moisture will stay North of Tahoe.

As for the snow.  Abundant amounts still exist above 7500' along the Tahoe Sierra Crest.  The past week with no freezing temps has put a huge dent into the snowpack.  This week backcountry riding will improve as nightime lows will approach the low 30s allowing for consolidation of the surface conditions.

Enjoy!

Still going.......

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

5/28/10 8:45am

Been a month.  technical issues.  Winter seems to be finally winding down today.  Close to a foot of fresh snow along the TSC the last few days.  More as you head South towards the Yosemite high country.  There is still a mid winter snowpack above 7500'.

There is an old saying.  When there is snow, ski.  When there is no snow, time to find something else to do.  A great three day weekend is here for all to get out and enjoy.  Go get some.  Summer will show up in the later half of next week.

Be mindful of a huge jump in temps that will occur Saturday/ Sunday.  With cold, new fresh snow and also the first big warm up in a while, unstable snow conditions will exist.  Best bet is to get out early and then head for some cold beers.

This weekend will feature sunny skies and temps in the 60s in Truckee and at lake level, 50s @ 8k.  Enjoy!

Nice weekend, snow on tap

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information 4/18/10 8:55pm

Super nice weekend with sunny skies, warm temps and great snow. Fantastic. That's all going to change as another later season winter storm is poised to bring another shot of winter our way. The battle of spring v. winter continues. By Monday night windy conditions will have once again developed over the region as a large area of low pressure in the GulfAK begins to send moisture and dynamics onshore. Winds and precipitation peak on Tuesday during the cold front passage. Much colder temps will linger Wednesday and Thursday. Expect a solid 25F drop in high temps between today and Wednesday. So for Tuesday expect much colder conditions, strong winds and rain/snow switching to all snow. High temps Tues/Wed will be in the 30s to near 40 for Truckee. As of tonight, Sunday, a winter storm watch has been issued for the Western Slope of the Northern Sierra by NWS Sacto for Tuesday. Snow fall totals (by Wednesday evening) will range from 12"+ around Tahoe to 12-24" above 8000' in the Mammoth area. Snow levels will start out rather high, 6500'+, but will fall below lake level by Tuesday afternoon. There does seems to be post frontal moisture, so light amounts of accumulating snows will fall throughout the Tahoe Basin at lake level. Warm up looks to hold off until Friday and into the weekend. Next week holds the possibility of still another round of winter weather.

Stay tuned. PWG
