Warren Miller's new film - "Dynasty"

"Dynasty" is already hitting the theaters. Check out where "Dynasty" will show in the Tahoe area. Look for the Jamaica Ski Team colors on the slopes of Alpine Meadows. It's in the first segment on Tahoe. - Errol

Watch the trailer here.

The Lake Tahoe segment in Dynasty includes local, world-class athletes pushing the limits of gravity and the sport while defining in their own words the beauty and cultural elements that comprise the Lake Tahoe experience that lure them back season after season. The astounding athlete roster ranges from former and aspiring Olympians to World Cup champions including Jonny Moseley, Daron Rahlves, Jamie Burge, Errol Kerr and JT Holmes, who were filmed at locations ranging from the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts and surrounding backcountry to the shores of Lake Tahoe itself.

"The prominent presence of seven Ski Lake Tahoe resorts in Warren Miller's Dynasty marries our iconic snowsports destination with a true ski industry icon - Warren Miller films," said John Wagnon, President of Ski Lake Tahoe. "There is no organization better qualified to visually capture Lake Tahoe's legendary terrain, amazing snow depth and world-class ski experience than the film crews at Warren Miller."

The action in the Lake Tahoe segment runs the gamut from massive cliff drops, back flips, scenic turns above the lake, chest-high powder runs following a textbook Tahoe winter storm to the perfectly-pitched steeps and lake views that make Tahoe legendary. The segment includes Olympic-related storylines, including Jamaican Ski Team member Errol Kerr who is training in Lake Tahoe for the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics. Additionally, the 2009-10 winter season marks the 50th Anniversary of Lake Tahoe hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Lake Tahoe's exposure in Dynasty will help build excitement among skiers and snowboarders for the upcoming season with predictions of an El Niño scenario in the long range weather forecast for Lake Tahoe and plenty of new enthusiast-focused amenities and activities at the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts. The El Niño predictions are on point, with the Lake Tahoe area already being blanketed by two storms that have delivered nearly two feet of early season snowfall. In addition, the Ski Lake Tahoe resorts are putting the finishing touches on new lifts, enhanced terrain parks, backcountry programs, and unique clinics and camps that include opportunities to ski with Dynasty film stars. Spyder's new Jamaica Ski Team gear

Kyra Williams writes from Vancouver, BC that she is a big fan of the Jamaica Ski Team. She just purchased her speed suit. This is the first siting of a speed suit since Spyder sent them out to the stores this month.

Kyra skis for the Sunpeaks Alpine Club in Kamloops BC which is near Vancouver.

Special thanks to Kyra's dad for the photos. We hope to see Kyra and her family at the Vancouver Olympics in February 2010.

Zepparella at the River Ranch

A few days ago, the San Francisco-based, all girls, Led Zeppelin tribute band named "Zepparella" made their usual summer swing through Tahoe and played at the awesome, cozy outdoor stage at the River Ranch Lodge at the base of Alpine Meadows road. If you haven't seen them before, not only do they rock for a chick band, but the lead singer Anna Kristina does a decent Robert Plant. If you ever see that they're playing in a town near you, I'd recommend checking them out.

To get a taste of Zepparella, click on the live video clips below.....

Mid March Madness from Nick Baron on Vimeo.

Here is a short edit of a sunny park day at Alpine. There are some cool GoPro angles I tried mounting it to my ski but it only stayed on for a short period.

Spring!!!

Obviously spring is here, and the skiing has been pretty good. There's been great turns to be had at Alpine Meadows and Squaw, but the backcountry is where its at. With the sun getting higher in the sky everyday the options for sun softened snow are really opening up. Between trips down to the east side I've been having fun skiing all over in the Tahoe BC. It was looking like the south side of Jakes was about to melt out for the season so my friend Oscar and I cruised out there for a couple laps yesterday. It is smooth, but going fast, so if you're stoked to get out for some spring backcountry, its a "the sooner the better" situation. Here's a shot from yesterday's mission, I know that any in-shape fifty year old could ski this, but I had fun anyway. Check out the crazy wind affect on the bay...

Errol Mega Update

Jamaica's Errol Kerr to compete in Ski Cross World Championships in Japan

Jamaican skier Errol Kerr, recipient of the Prime Minister's Youth Award, has arrived in Inawashiro, Japan to compete in the Ski Cross World Championships. Official training begins Feb 28th. Qualifications and finals are on Monday, March 2. For more information, please click on the following: World Championships - Inawashiro, Japan

Hotel Listel Inawashiro--

Here's an early report from Homey (Eric Holmer, Errol's coach and technician) on the course in Japan:

"We freeskied and checked out the course today. There aren't many turns, but there are a lot of straight sections that should make for some great passing if the conditions hold out. It's always hard to predict, but this should be a good course for Errol. I know he feels really good about his chances after just seeing it from outside the fence."

Two week break from ski cross world cup (Feb 7-23th)

Kerr took a two week break from the Ski Cross World Cup circuit to focus on some competitions and appearances near home:

North America Cup On February 10th, Errol competed in the North America Cup Super G in Mammoth, California, finishing 12th. He finished ahead of some US Ski Team members, and it was a great result for a racer who has been focusing on ski cross all season.

Sugar Bowl Banzai - On qualification day, Kerr was being filmed at Alpine Meadows in the early morning, and barely made it to Sugar Bowl to inspect the course and decide on his line. The race is six-man wide, big mountain skicross. Amazingly, Errol finished 2nd in the qualifying run, right behind US Ski Team's famous Daron Rahlves. The following day, Kerr "lost his shoes" (came out of his bindings) and did not finish the race.

For photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/catherinekerr1/SugarBowlBanzai?feat=directlink

Errol with Alpine Meadows Ski Team youth - On Saturday, Feb 21st, Errol spent the day leading the Alpine Meadows ski team youth through gullies and jumps. Children reported that they were having the time of their lives following Errol around the mountain. Alpine Meadows is the home training mountain for the Jamaica Ski Team.
For photos, please click on this link: Errol and the Alpine Ski Team

Photos and video of Errol powder skiing at Alpine and Homewood
No ski season is complete without glorious days of skiing in the powder. The Tahoe area was slammed with snow for one week straight, and Errol didn't hesistate to take the opportunity to go out skiing with the film crew at Alpine Meadows in waste deep powder. Lake Placid Freestyle World Cup

On Thursday, January 15th the Jamaica Ski Team arrived at the Lake Placid Freestyle World Cup. Lake Placid is located about 5 hours north of New York City and was the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. This weekend's events will include moguls, aerials, and ski cross.

History of Freestyle
In the early days of freestyle skiing the sport was named for the "free" and creative element introduced by athletes who resisted traditional alpine and nordic skiing. Competitions included an all-in-one-run event where skiers were judged on a run that included ballet, moguls and a spontaneous aerial maneuver. Today the evolution of freestyle skiing is made up of six different disciplines; aerials, halfpipe, moguls, dual moguls, ski cross and slopestyle. Each discipline is judged and scored to their own points list. Freestyle skiing was added to the Olympic program in 1992 for moguls, aerials in 1994, and ski cross will debut in the 2010 Olympic Games.

Schedule at Lake Placid; and TV Schedule
The international ski cross teams are staying at the town of Lake Placid and will compete at Whiteface Mountain. Ski Cross practice begins on Friday, January 16th, with the qualification on Sunday, and the finals on Monday. For a complete schedule, please visit:

Ski Cross Schedule (East coast time/Jamaica time)
9:45-11:15 Qualifications -- Sunday, January 18
11:00-12:00 FINALS -- Monday, January 19

For television coverage of the event, according to USSA...

"NBC will air the Nature Valley Freestyle Cup ski cross competition Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Versus will air the Nature Valley Freestyle Challenge aerials competition that same day at 2:00 p.m. ET as well as the Nature Valley Freestyle Cup ski cross show on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m. ET.UniversalSports.com and TV will also carry coverage."

Among those attending the event, will be...
Jamaicans from Toronto and Jamaica will be attending the event. Mr. Richard Salm, President and Founder of the Jamaica Ski Federation, will be flying up from Jamaica to encourage and support the team.

Members of the National Brotherhood of Skiers will be driving from New York and Vermont to watch Kerr compete. The NBS is an African American organization that promotes winter sports among African Americans, and grants scholarships to worthy African American youth to assist in their expenses in ski racing. In February 2008, NBS members were present at the Deer Valley Freestyle World Cup, and showed strong support of Errol.

Racing and Training: Jamaica Ski Team
The Lake Placid event will be Kerr's second World Cup of the 2008-9 season. At the first World Cup in St Johann, Austria, Kerr finished 30th among a field of 78. During the past week, Errol, along with his coach and technician, returned to California to train at Alpine Meadows. Said Kerr, "Those were the best days of training I have had in 2 years," referring to the hard snow surface and excellent training conditions at Alpine.

Enviornmentally Friendlier Resorts Transworld Snowboarding.

Going green is the thing right now....We should always try to find a way to lessen our global impact when we can. Here's a little Web article from Tansworld Snowboarding and a shot featuring PortersTahoe.com Team Rider Brandon Cocard at Alpine Meadows. Brandon is currently on the road where he going to be competing in the 2nd stop of the Dew Tour in Vermont! Go Brandon! In the photo here of Brandon...he looks like the kinda guy who would smash his beer cans on his forehead and then throw them away in the Lake. Granted, after his epic volleybal game, he slammed those beers and let "IceMan" dispose of them properly.

Awww, I'm so touched that anyone cares. Clearly I didn't realize that this short clip of video would be under such scrutiny, nor was it my submission for the radness award. My intention for this short video clip was to show that snow conditions in the area were still alright, and that I'd had a fun time skiing in the backcountry with my friends. Next time I'll be sure to throw at least one double grab, and maybe a 100 foot lawn dart, just to up the progression.
Also, as it turns out, I am a glorified ski model. I know that. I've also done a limited amount of actual male modelling, but I prefer the ski modelling because they don't make me wear make-up. Don't be an internet weenie, if you've got a problem with me and how I ski, and apparently you know who I am, grab a few runs with me. I'd happily take a few runs with anyone, I'm really a pretty nice guy...

Dust on Crust = good?

videoWith about a maximum of six inches reported in and around the Tahoe area resorts I wasn't holding on to much hope for an awesome day....   Then I got to Alpine and took a few runs with the boys.  Sure the wind was whipping at the top of summit and the ridge top hikes were a little rough on exposed facial skin, but as long as you kept to the places that were smooth before this last storm there were some great turns to be had.  I had tons of fun hitting small airs and skiing around on my Elan Pogo Holmes.  I was breaking in a brand new pair of Dalbello Krypton Pro's, so my feet were a little tender, but watching my buddy Charlie stomp switch landings and three's off natural features made me forget all about it...  Here's a clip from Estelle Bowl at Alpine today.

Best two weeks ever?

videoThis vid is me skiing a little line on the Buttress at Alpine Meadows, yesterday was about as good as it gets.  The color is a little off in this clip, but I'm getting my new Viosport POV.1 all figured out.  It is dope, I'm glad that someone finally simplified, and dare I say perfected, the helmet cam.

Today while my body was rejecting my efforts to skin up yet another mountain it hit me.  I'm pretty sure that today was my 14th day of skiing in a row.  Incredibly it was my 14th day of powder skiing in a row, and what a couple of weeks it has been.  Wherever you ski in the western United States I'm pretty sure it has been the same, and I hope that everyone has been getting some.  Freshies have been incredibly abundant and the ski areas are all looking good.  My Elan Quad 1's are starting to feel the abuse that I've been putting them through, and I think its time to break out a fresh pair.   Get yourself some new fat skis and get ready to slay some pow.  It doesn't get much better than it's been.  Happy New Year to you all!

Dear Jeremy,

During the first half of the video, when you are standing up there looking around, what were you thinking about? "Buttress...mmmmm, butt. BUTT. Buttocks. I love BUTT." That is my guess.

0-60 in typical Tahoe Fashion

This is what it looked like in the backcountry today, seriously!

When I was fixing a flat tire on my mountain bike last friday I had no idea the dumping that we were in for.  The weather looked promising at the time, but at no point did it mention that we'd have 4 feet of new snow in three days.  The fresh 40+ inch layer of superlight fluff has turned my dreams into a reality and I've gotten face shots for the past three days.  It looks like Alpine Meadows will be open top to bottom starting Friday, and people who skied at Squaw today said that it was "pretty freaking good".  I've been taking full advantage of the hiking opportunities and getting fresh lines down pretty much whatever I want thanks to my Marker Dukes, while trying not to get too deep into the snow.  We did get plastered,  but its pretty much all the snow we've got, so pay attention and be careful out there.  There are snow snakes aplenty out there right now, so stay light on your feet and keep your tips up.  Significant settling has occurred over the past several days, so the bottom has become more difficult to find, but not that difficult.  Looks like there is more on the way, so get ready to shred pow until you can't even stand up.  For information on avalanche conditions check out www.sierraavalanchecenter.org.  Have fun, and see you out there.

Alpine Meadows is OPEN!!!

Alpine Meadows opened today, Friday December 12th.  We now have five ski areas partially open in the Lake Tahoe Basin, making for tons of snow sliding fun for the whole family.  The snowmaking crew has been working hard and managed to put a few sweet ribbons of snow down.  Kangaroo and Meadow were open, and it was off the hook.  Seems like we've got a little snow on the way, so get out and start making some turns, hopefully the season'll be in full swing before we know it.  For more information go to www.skialpine.com.

Nicky B's Supersession

Monday night we finally got some snow worth getting excited about. On my way home from work at around 6:00pm it was really coming down. I had a little trouble getting up Alpine Meadows road but the two-wheel drive white pearl always seems to amaze me.

Needless to say everyone in my household was pumped that it was snowing too. Beers were cracked, and bowls were packed we wasted no time and began celebrating immediately. We started it out by having what I like to call a “super session” Two guitars, an acoustic bass, mandolin, keyboard, harmonica, alto sax, bongos, and an array of common household items used to make cultural percussion sounds. There were only four of us so I had to step it up by playing numerous instruments at a mediocre level. My buddy Pieper killed it on the mandolin, my roommate Double D played rhythm guitar and random percussion, and my roommate Hubey laid down a tasty bass groove. (There is a link below to listen to it if you have the time check it out.)

The super session lasted almost 12min but we stopped due to the bright lightening strikes coming from outside. We all decided to throw on our snow gear and hit the neighborhood hill for a little late night sledding. We armed ourselves with a couple of saucers, a skate deck, and a boogie board/reverse camber POW sled. Oh yeah and my buddy made his own port wine from California’s finest vines so we each held on to some of that. There was not a huge amount of cover on the sledding hill so we had to be somewhat cautious. We were charging through weeds and things since there was only like 6 inches at this point. There were a few rag dolls some spilt port and a lot of laughs. Nobody was injured but everyone was soar and the only thing lost in the fiasco was a pair of 2 year old anon goggles.

Its crazy the way snow can make everyone so happy so quickly. Those 6 to 8 inches inspired my friends and I to rage on a Monday night like college freshman, jam out like a bunch of burning man hippies, and sled around like kids on a snow day all in a matter of a hours. Lets hope these good times keep coming but meanwhile lets just enjoy the snow and be happy that we don’t live on the east coast, because this would be the storm for the winter.

PS. Here is a sneak peak of my traveling circus theme song. This is the full version unedited.

Snow Watch 08 #1: Alpine Meadows

Errol Kerr took a hike up to the top of Lakeview to scope out the pre season conditions on Alpine Meadows. Though the first good winter storms are on the horizon in late October, the early season conditions are still a little off. We start making snow in a few weeks, and expect some natural accumulation this weekend. Scott Peak Ride

This past Saturday I finally had my chance to ride a good old favorite, the Scott Peak Loop Ride. I used to ride this loop quite often when I lived on the westshore but now that I have relocated to Truckee it makes it a bit tougher to get over there as often as I would like to. The ride starts our at 64 acres park in Tahoe City, taking the bike trail south towards Sunnyside. Turn right at Rubicon deli and start heading towards Granlibaken. At the Granlibaken Sign turn right, sorry but I only remember landmarks and I am not so good with street names. Ride the street till it dead ends into a fire road with a closed gate. This starts the long uphill ride to Paige Meadows and unless you have done this ride before you climb for a longtime. Note: the climb to Paige has completely chaged since the forest service came in and cleaned up the forest. The climb starts out as a double wide fire road and turns into a single track. There are a couple of places to turn off but keep going straight and uphill. I wish I had the timing down but I could guess at about 45 minutes from TC to Paige. Once your in Paige you kinda free to explore, their are soo many trails to choose from its really riders delight. The goal is to get to the fire road that is on the backside of Paige meadows or in other words if you get to a place that seems like its going to take you down a rocky fire road down to ward creek turn around and head back and turn to your left. Ride up the single track and take the first left you see. The trail seems kinda funky and super rocky, you will know your on the right trail when you have to dismount to walk across a few man made bridges and once you've crossed youwill end up on another fire road. You should see signs and evidence of logging equipment and thats how you know your in the right place. Head up the fire road till you get to a T in the road, at this point you can choose to go right and go back to Tahoe City or go left and go to Scott Peak.

If Scott is your destination head left and enjoy a nice fire road that climbs and descends alot. The final turn will be a left that you will not miss, it goes UP. Take this fire road all the way to the top, and it starts out with an easy climb that keeps going up and as you get closer to the top it gets more technical and steeper. But once you arrive at the top you will enjoy amazing views with very limited blockage of your views. The best part of this ride... you get to go back down and its a fun, fast float of a downhill ride. There are so many options to get back home that I just go back to Paige and aim towards Flinstones which dumps you out near Tahoe City Lumber. I wish I could detail the ride better but all in all its a tough ride, bring lots of water and your climbing legs. The ride can be around 17-20 miles with a good elevation gain that tops out at Lakeveiw chair in Alpine Meadows. Don't be afraind to ask direction when your on the trail because you can easily get lost with the vast trail system.

Tahoe's four letter word

Yeah, its been a while since we could say this dirty four letter word round these parts but SNOW has finally made its way back. The weekend gave us some hope that we could actually eak a winter out of this season. But I really can't say this season has sucked. There were some great chalky snow days, and it really threw the hammer down on those who had the skill versus those who did not. Which made it more gooder for those who knew where to find the goods. Also the metal has been quite nice as well. Most of the area mountains have recognized the need for better parks and this dry spell has really shown who has and who has not focused on that need.

Nothstar... what can you say but fun. Squaw, compared to years past I would say they deserve an honorable mention for the updated park features. Alpine, the word is that they are doing some really good work over in the meadow. Homewood, poor little homewood, I last rode there christmas day and I honestly can say it was one of my best days this season, but on the park side of things well, can't do much when there isn't much snow. But I love that little mountain anyway. Sugarbowl, our own team rider Devin "the dude" price works over there and word is that JP is building a great park this year. Boreal... well the whole hill is a park so how can you go wrong.

Now that snow is here its time to venture away from the parks till the spring time.

- web guy
