Refresher

While I heard it was pretty good today at the resorts I have no regrets about cruising down to Mt. Tallac to ski some high, north facing pow. High elevation snow was still good cold powder before our 6 inch refresher last night, which was icing on the cake. In the photo above my buddies scope their line before dropping in, with some really fun terrain in the background...The terrain on Mt Tallac is second to no other mountain in the basin. Check out the rad lines in the background as we get ready to drop our next line. The short video below is from my best run of the day today. Its hard to see in the clip but the top three quarters of this line are exposed above a 150 foot cliff, blowing a turn or getting caught in your sluff are not an option...
Needless to say, there is some great skiing out there, and judging from the snow that has just started falling, I'd say its looking to get even better.

Pyramid Peak

After nine winters living in Tahoe and skiing the backcountry I am always stoked to get out and do something new. Since I'm somewhat of a creature of habit there are way more things that I haven't done out there than things I have. I suppose that I tend to get into a groove with the places I ski, and I often find that I just do what is easier, or closer. This was not the case yesterday. A friend of Lynn and I suggested that we go ski Pyramid Peak in Desolation Wilderness. In the photograph above, Pyramid is on the left, Mt. Price is on the right, and Jack's peak is in the foreground, pictured from the summit of Dick's Peak. At 9,983 feet, Pyramid Peak is the highest point in the wilderness and one of the most aesthetic mountains in the region. We chose to access this peak from the closest main road, and we parked our car around 6,000 feet at the Horsetail Falls parking area off of Highway 50. The hike brings you up a southeast facing ridge to start and at that elevation the snow was a little thin... We had a bit of an interesting bushwack to start out our day. After ascending about 500 feet or so we were out of the thinly covered rocks and bushes and up onto a prominent ridge that would lead us all the way to the top of Pyramid Peak. While the summit isn't very close to where we parked getting there was quite straightforward and the navigation was simple, once you were out of the bushes. In the photo below Lynn approaches the Southeast side of Pyramid Peak about 3 hours into our hike...
After hanging out at the summit for a while we dropped in on our objective, the north face of Pyramid. Having only viewed this face from a distance I always thought that it was way longer and steeper than it actually was. The snow on the north side was still nice and powdery despite the unseasonably warm temperatures that we've had lately and the skiing was great. Here's a shot of the north side of Pyramid with good coverage, many seasons this doesn't fill in well enough to be able to ski it without walking over rocks...
After skiing the north side we traversed back around and skied a variety of terrain and snow conditions near the route that we came up. Coverage was great and the terrain interesting most of the way back down to the car. Things got a little spicy once we got back down below 6500 feet or so, but with some good route finding, a little bit of bush skiing, and some questionable creek crossings we made it out of there with no problems at all.
It was a beautiful day in tahoe yesterday and going out to try something new with a mellow crew made for a fun and relaxing day in the backcountry. Its always fun to ski something you've never skied before and a mountain like this that stares you in the face is nice to check off the list. This peak is deep so if you plan to head out there be prepared for a long day or take it easy and make it an overnight...

I am so happy that people are "fascinated" by what I have to say. I may write a book, and if I do I'll be sure to blog about it so people have a place to anonymously try and clown on me on the internet...

My prayers have been answered

For a few years now I have hoped that I might eventually have a taller heel riser for my Marker Duke bindings. Finally my prayers have been answered. I recently acquired a set of the new "long" heel risers. The difference is pretty substantial as you can see in the following photos.
The new taller heel riser is on the right, obviously. The difference is truly amazing, taking pressure and strain off my lower back and hips, making skinning uphill easier and more comfortable. Anyone who has felt that the heel risers were too short on their Dukes should get their hands on a set a.s.a.p.
With new and improved Duke heel risers views like these are much easier to come by. This is the view to the south from the summit of Jakes today...

2009 Lake Tahoe Marathon With 3 Porters Employees

Yesterday 3 longtime Porters employees - Alex Ruimerman, Kathy Karlovic, and Stephanie Craven - braved the "Hill from Hell" and the rest of the 26+ miles of the 2009 edition of the Lake Tahoe Marathon. This was somewhat of a "on the whim" decision by Alex many months ago. Mind you Alex is not a "runner", so this was a big feat. In fact, a first for all 3 of them. Go team go!!!

They started their day on Commons Beach in Tahoe City. They then went down the best shore - the West Shore - on highway 89 past Emerald Bay all the way down to Pope Beach just past Camp Richardson. I got a lot of great pics I think......I'm just bummed that I missed the girls crossing the finish line an hour before Alex :) I was hanging back giving him support.....along with his childhood friend Barr who came up from San Diego just to run it with him.....in a stinkin' cotton t-shirt of all things!

2nd Annual Stand Up Paddleboard Lake Tahoe Crossing

Despite some pretty nasty weather yesterday Thursday August 6th that only got worse as the morning went on, Robb Gaffney and Dave Kalama plus a group of two dozen ski and snowboard athletes and friends attempted the 2nd annual Lake Tahoe Stand Up Paddleboard crossing to benefit the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation and reMIND.org. TV journalist Bob Woodruff sustained severe brain trauma in a roadside bombing while covering the war in Iraq in 2006. The foundation was created to provide extra resources and support for US soldiers and other victims of traumatic brain injuries.
Just like last year I agreed to be a "support boat" for the paddlers - several of which are personal friends and athletes in the area including this year one of PortersTahoe.com's ski team athletes Tim Dutton. So about 5am I took off from the Coast Guard station in Tahoe City and headed south for Camp Richardson. The moonset and sunrise were awesome....

It was already pretty windy in the middle and south of the lake as an unseasonably cold and windy front began to move in, so the starting point was moved to Meeks Bay. Luckily we got a little lull in the wind after sunrise - plus with the bay being more protected - that allowed for a picture perfect start.

However, it didn't take more than a half hour before the storm starting kicking up and heading our way. Quickly the group split into those with enough experience and the right boards to try and out-run it to Kings Beach, while the rest wisely peeled off at Homewood.

I made one last check on the group pushing on about parallel with Dollar Point, and then I made a run for it back to Tahoe City before the Coast Guard's "red flag" small craft advisory REALLY kicked into gear.....

Jake Burton Carpenter Wakesurfing Lake Tahoe

Jake Burton Carpenter Wakesurfing on Lake Tahoe from Chappy on Vimeo.

I was going through my computer last night and found this gem of a video clip. This was taken in the summer of 2006 on Lake Tahoe's west shore near Sunnyside Resort.

Jake Burton - yes that Jake Burton Carpenter from Burton Snowboards - flew in to Truckee, CA a few summers ago for a meeting with the Northstar-at-Tahoe folks to put the final touches on the Burton sponsored, feature-rich zone called "The Stash".There was a couple hour window after his meeting and before he had to fly down to SoCal, and our Burton sales rep Laurent Vrignaud wanted to squeeze in a quick cocktail at Sunnyside Resort on Lake Tahoe's west shore.....and Jake's first wakesurfing session.

The weather was less than ideal as it was cooler temperatures and a bit windy in the afternoon, so we went around the corner from Sunnyside to Hurricane Bay and made the best of it. This is behind my 2005 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV.

So while Jake didn't have the time and conditions to really dial in a good wakesurfing session, he nonetheless was able to throw the rope in the boat on the third run and, "Check it off the list baby!"

Zepparella at the River Ranch

A few days ago, the San Francisco-based, all girls, Led Zeppelin tribute band named "Zepparella" made their usual summer swing through Tahoe and played at the awesome, cozy outdoor stage at the River Ranch Lodge at the base of Alpine Meadows road. If you haven't seen them before, not only do they rock for a chick band, but the lead singer Anna Kristina does a decent Robert Plant. If you ever see that they're playing in a town near you, I'd recommend checking them out.

To get a taste of Zepparella, click on the live video clips below.....

February 13, 2009 Northstar Pow

The day after a amazing Squaw Pow day we had a nice reload last night so off to Northstar for some more pow pow runs. Porters TM and Photo guy Eric Asistin joined me for some fun Northstar laps and some chuckles along the way. Northstar can soemtimes be the left out buddy in the Tahoe region, being over shadowed by larger mountains like Squaw and Alpine Meadows and sometimes get the short end of the stick... Not in our current series of storms!!Finally Lookout and the Backside are getting filled and Northstar is busy getting all the preperations ready for the upcoming Dew Tour!!

Be ready for this weekend and into next week... the Lake Tahoe storm door is open!!

Want to do some of the same fun follow cam shots?? then buy the Go Pro Helmet Cam!!

Aspen bound.

Well, I was going to do a post with a lot of pictures from my travels over the past month, but for some reason the internet keeps pooping out and I can't upload any more photos than these two. So I suppose the pics won't really tell the story. Nonetheless, it's been a hectic month of traveling and even though these two photos don't quite give my month long of traveling justice, they will have to do just fine. From Tahoe, Retallack, Mustang Powder, X Games, SIA in Vegas, back to Tahoe, and now off to Colorado...I have a lot of plane stubs, overweight charges, and added miles to my truck.

It's been fun. A complete transition from the filming aspect of skiing to the competition aspect was one of the things that I experienced. It gave me some culture shock (the only way I can think of to describe the feeling that I had after leaving the cozy lodge of Mustang Powder to X Games) and again allowed me to reevaluate what I love about skiing. It's not the bright lights, the interviews, the cameras, and VIP energy drink parties. I'm more interested in the quite life living in my long underwear in the woods only accessible by cat or snowmobile (I suppose these two pictures go along with that part of my story).

After having some difficulty getting into the invite only slopestyle competitions this year (seeing as I didn't compete last year) I've been super motivated to get back on the list. In skiing right now, everything seems to be planned around hopefully getting skiing halfpipe into the Olympics. With that being the case, 2 of our bigger open slopestyle events have been canceled due to lack of funding (US Open, and North American Open). So off to the Aspen Open I go. It will be on the X Games course (which I've been riding on during X for a few days). I'm really looking forward to getting back in the game and feeling the rush that competitions give me. Despite the fact that I don't always like what goes along with competitons, I'll enjoy spending some days in the park and catching up on some reading while at home. I figure I can balance out the hype with some quite time.

Enough writting...sometimes I do that. I hope Tahoe gets some snow! Enjoy the sunny weather while we've got it.

Elyse in Alaska

So as most of you know the Tahoe season started a little slow this year. Thank the snow gods it's know here but as of three weeks ago the slopes of Squaw resembled the hills of some godforsaken place that never gets snow but still has mountains. Anyways, with most of the North American forecast looking bleak, Cody and I decided to book a last minute flight to my home state of Alaska to slice and dice some powder like the Turkey I cooked for Thanksgiving. The snow was amazing, the skies were frigid cold and the powder was deep and often sprayed us in the face. Here are some pics from the early winter subarctic.

Confidential Cliffs, Secret Chutes and Private Powder

This zone is in a double super extra super duper secret area 51 and today we just discovered it like Colombus discovered America. Well, yeah you know, we're claiming we discovered it even though people have probably been here for a very long time. I'm sure a Prius has probably even made it up the paved road to this area that I will know name The Codiferius Cliffs of Townsendia. So yeah, here's a cool face and we're gonna ski it.

Alpine Meadows is OPEN!!!

Alpine Meadows opened today, Friday December 12th.  We now have five ski areas partially open in the Lake Tahoe Basin, making for tons of snow sliding fun for the whole family.  The snowmaking crew has been working hard and managed to put a few sweet ribbons of snow down.  Kangaroo and Meadow were open, and it was off the hook.  Seems like we've got a little snow on the way, so get out and start making some turns, hopefully the season'll be in full swing before we know it.  For more information go to www.skialpine.com.

Snow Acomin!!

Maybe its a bit early to get really excited but this weather statement makes it sound like this week could be FUN!!!

TWO AREAS OF LOW PRESSURE WILL AFFECT THE REGION THIS WEEK. THE
FIRST ARRIVES TUESDAY AND THE SECOND BY LATE THANKSGIVING DAY INTO
EARLY FRIDAY.

RAIN AND SNOW WITH THE FIRST SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO REACH THE
CENTRAL SIERRA ON TUESDAY AND SPREAD INTO WESTERN NEVADA ON
TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY AS THE LOW MOVES ONSHORE. THIS SYSTEM
WILL BRING DOWN SNOW LEVELS TO 5500 TO 6000 FEET ACROSS THE
REGION FOR TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR
SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THE SIERRA SOUTH OF LAKE TAHOE
TO MAMMOTH LAKES.

THE TRACK OF THE SECOND SYSTEM REMAINS QUITE UNCERTAIN AS IT DROPS
OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA. FORECAST MODELS ARE INDICATING THIS
SYSTEM COULD MOVE SOUTH ALONG THE SIERRA OR REMAIN JUST OFF THE
CALIFORNIA COAST. HOWEVER CONFIDENCE THAT THE STORM WILL AFFECT THE
AREA LATE THANKSGIVING DAY OR EARLY FRIDAY IS INCREASING. FORECAST
MODELS INDICATE THE SYSTEM MAY LINGER OVER THE REGION INTO SATURDAY...
WITH COLD AND MOIST CONDITIONS. SNOW LEVELS MAY DROP BELOW 5000
FEET IF THE STORM MOVES SOUTH ALONG THE SIERRA WHILE SNOW LEVELS
WOULD BE HIGHER IF THE SYSTEM REMAINS OFFSHORE. THE MOST LIKELY
TIME FRAME FOR POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT SNOWS IN THE SIERRA IS FROM LATE
THANKSGIVING DAY INTO FRIDAY. LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS MAY BE POSSIBLE
FOR ELEVATIONS BELOW 5500 FEET...INCLUDING PORTIONS OF WESTERN
NEVADA.

IF YOU HAVE TRAVEL PLANS FOR THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY IN THE
SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA...BE PREPARED FOR WINTER DRIVING
CONDITIONS. CHECK OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV/RENO FOR UPDATES
ON HOW THESE STORMS MAY IMPACT HOLIDAY TRAVEL.

Election Day Snow

GOOD MORNING TO SNOW!! So hopefully everyone is making out to the polls safely this morning. If you live in the Tahoe area you were greeted with a treat of our first real snowfall. Not that this will be enough to get any of the resorts firing up the lifts but rumor has it that Boreal may have a go at it this Friday. We will keep you posted as Shaydar teases us with Tahoe's first resort to open as they usually do. Hopefully once we get some blue back in the sky later today we can go out and snap some updated shots... just to make you drool!

Extreme Skateboarding!

Welcome to the house of dudes, where music and the sweet sound of skateboard wheels pumping a mini pipe is never ending like the waves of teahupoo.  Zak Shelhamer was there to capture the action on the afternoon of monday the 13th.  "The level of skating was higher then hippies at a phish show" says 20 year old Brandon Cocard of Truckee Ca. "I've never skated a ramp like this. Trannys so tight it will make you never want to go to reno again... if you know what i'm saying." We know what your saying Brandon.  Skating was performed by locals Dan Conroy, Taylor Corlton, Nic Visconti and Cocard. Judging by Sean Carney.  Photos By Zak Shelhamer.
