After a day in the sun and the park we headed up to the Pool party that was sponsored by Monster Energy drink. The athletes got in their boardshorts and started to enjoy the drinks, beats and hot tub and pool. Around 4:15 one of the girls that works for Squaw at the pool started asking people to get out of the hot tub...one of the athletes, I believe it was Peter Olenick, decided he didn't want to get out and decided that she needed get in. She ended up in the tub with all her clothes on...poor girl. If you can make it up for Squaw last weekend for the 2008-2009 season, do it because there is nothing better then a morning of spring skiing or snowboarding and an afternoon of hot tubbing, swimming and beer at the top of Squaw.

By MAG.COM
Bad cell phone reception is just a way of life for snowboarders. Spending tons of time in the mountains will do that. Despite some shaky coverage we caught up with boardercrosser Nate Holland, the Michael Phelps of the snow (because of the gold medals, not anything else), who last month became the first Winter X athlete ever to win four straight gold medals. So how long does a guy bask in the glow of a career high? If you're Holland not long. The very next week he took first overall at the opener of the 2009 U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix series in Truckee, CA. After some fits and stops—pesky cell phones—we got boardercross' most decorated athlete on the phone to talk about going down a mountain really fast. —C.P.
MAG.COM: So what's it like to be Mr. Fourpeat?
HOLLAND: Going into the race I was feeling so much pressure from everyone, the media, the fans. Everybody wanted to see if I could do it. In my hometown of Sands Point, Idaho, 300 people gathered at a bar for the race so I was definitely feeling it. But I felt strong and pulled it off. It kind of baffles me how I'm able to win year after year.
How do you train? How does one get better at boardercross?
There aren't a lot of tracks at ski resorts so I end up doing a ton of freeriding. It definitely improves your air awareness skills, which are key. After you get done doing big mountain and you get on a boardercross course everything looks easy. There's also cardio involved. I pretty much ride a mountain bike in the off-season and do a little bit of weights for strength. Riding motocross is great for helping you spot lines and quickly adapt to what's in front of you so you can improve your reaction time. The skills transfer really well.
Where do you keep your four golds?
They're in my office at my house. I dust them off every now and then. The great thing is that during any kind of negotiations they definitely help you up the price.
Boardercross is a growing sport but isn't on par with freestyle in terms of popularity. What gives?
I'm not really sure. The snowboard industry really doesn't treat the racing side that well. It's the race mentality and the look, racers where tighter pants as opposed to baggy and it's just not as marketable. The general public loves it though. They can relate more to a race where the fastest guy wins. When they watch a freestyle run they have no idea what the announcer is talking about. A Danny Kass run looks the same as a Shaun White run to them so they don't know why one guy won and the other didn't.
Was becoming a snowboarder always part of the plan?
I've been doing it since I was 11 so it's always been something I loved. But I played football in high school because it was fun getting out there and hitting guys.
Were you any good?
I wasn't bad. I played strong safety and we had a pretty good team. During my senior year the week before the Idaho state playoffs my friends and me built a jump and I was hitting the kicker and ended up straining the MCL in my knee. I came in limping Monday morning and my coach was pissed. He thought I put the team in jeopardy and that I had let everyone down. My coach pretty much thought that I should give up snowboarding for good since it wasn't ever going to get me anywhere. We ended up winning the game but my coach never forgot it.
Sounds like a coach all right.
A couple years ago I went to my 10-year high school reunion and my coach was there and brought up the incident. He said he was proud of me for sticking with snowboarding and making the Olympics. He follows my career now, which I think is pretty cool.

This last week wraps up a crazy schedule for 4peat XGames Gold Medalist Nate Holland. Nate is happy to be home and to be able to race on home turf here in Tahoe. This weekend is the USSA Chevy Grand Prix tour at Boreal Mountain Resort. I was able to catch up with Nate and get a few runs in with him and play with some new toys I've recently acquired to enhance our multimedia pleasures here at PortersTahoe.com. Come on out to Boreal and check out all the action this weekend.

Nate Holland
There may be plenty of smaller stories surrounding this year's Snowboarder X Men's competition, but like planets around the sun, they'll all orbit Nate Holland and his quest for a fourth straight gold medal. He's the first SBX'er to pull the feat since Shaun Palmer did it way back in '97-'99. That's two presidents ago, back when cell phones were the size of small hams.
He's expected by most- at least most media types- to pull the fourpeat. Like last year, the course is long, meaning he won't be killed by a random bad start. Clearly Holland and Buttermilk are simpatico. Still, he's not counting any chickens.
"The way I think about it, every year it doesn't matter what my history is. It's basically about the task at hand. The media can write about the threepeat or fourpeat or whatever it is, and I'll always try to remember that it's still a race I have to win, and it's never on the same course. The competition is stiff and I have to get out there and do what I do. I definitely know how to win here. I have that card in my pocket, which I think is a good one."
No question. Competitively speaking, that can cut both ways. Everyone else on the course knows his track record, meaning they'll be either a little psyched out or more psyched up. Plus, there's the media glare. Holland told me he didn't get much attention until last year, when he went for three straight. The spotlight is brighter in '09.
"It's a little nerve racking going in, with all these expectations placed on you when you've won it three years in a row. People say, "You're the favorite, you're the guy to beat." But you have to wash all that away. It's gonna make you nervous unless you harness that in a good, positive manner that you can race with."

Stand Up Paddle (SUP) 20+ Mile Crossing of Lake Tahoe
Monday, August 11th at 4am or so the day started for a couple dozen athletes with a daunting task ahead of them – hop on a 12 foot “Stand Up Paddle” (SUP) board and paddle over 20 miles across the length of the lake from Camp Richardson to Kings Beach. Even though a few random people have already claimed to have crossed the lake in the same fashion, it was the first mass crossing of its kind to all of our knowledge.
For an inaugural event with a low-key, non “race” approach, the turnout was awesome. Big wave legend and all-around waterman Dave Kalama showed up. So did Chuck Patterson. So did the Billabong XXL winner from 2006 and our NorCal Volcom sales rep Ken “Skindog” Collins. Porters’ team athletes JT Holmes and Nate Holland along with several of Tahoe’s finest such as Daron Rahlves, Jeremy Jones, and the Gaffney brothers all braved the crossing as well – even if it was only their first or second time on a SUP board. The real inspiration, however, was one-armed Patagonia ambassador Jeff Denholm. Lying down on his belly he paddled the whole thing with the help of a specially-designed prosthetic arm shaped like a paddle.
A couple of guys decided to break away from the group and turn it into a semi-race a couple of miles into the event. The unofficial fastest time was clocked by Kings Beach resident and SUP boarder Dave Defoe in 4 hours and 35 minutes. Always the racer at heart – and after only one other time on a SUP board – Daron Rahlves hit the sand second about 10 minutes after him. The rest of the crew all stayed together as a group, taking several “refueling” breaks along the way, and pulled onto the beach about 7 hours after starting.
The event was organized between James “Woody” Woodruff, Rob Gaffney, and Dave Kalama first and foremost for Woody’s foundation called the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation (www.bobwoodrufffamilyfund.org). TV journalist Bob Woodruff sustained severe brain trauma in a roadside bombing while covering the Iraq war in 2006. The foundation was created to provide extra resources and support for US soldiers and other victims of traumatic brain injury. CR Johnson – himself a victim from his head injury skiing a couple of years ago – was also there to lend his support.

YEAH NOW! I wish I would have known about this, I would of been all over it. Havin' fun and all for a great cause. Please get the word out next time you guy's do a SUP event.

Jeep King of the Mountain Tour Day 1

Once again, it's been beautiful and sunny out here in Lake Tahoe. Today was the 1st day of competition for the Jeep King of the Mountain Tour here at Squaw Valley USA. Todays event was mens and womens boardercross racing. The course wasn't the longest, but fast and sweet. If you had the holeshot, you were pretty sure to keep it if you held off the other competitors and held your own.
PortersTahoe.com athlete Nate Holland was on course as well still enjoying the high from his 3-peat XGames Gold. Competition was stiff today though, as Shaun Palmer who was very disappointed with his X Games appearance looked for revenge. Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott and the burly Nick Baumgartner were on hand as well adding excitement to the racing. Former Olympic halfpipe Gold Medalist Ross Powers was also in attendance trying to rejuvenate his boardercross roots.
in the end Shaun Palmer took all the marbles and I don't think he was ever behind anyone on the course. Nate Holland came from last place all the way into 2nd in the finals. If the course were a bit longer he may have caught up to Palm. Nick Baumgartner & Nate did make some contact throughout the course and I think a protest was filed. But as the saying goes, rubbin is racing. In the womens final, Lindsey Jacobellis does it again. Joanie Anderson was pressing her hard, but couldn't catch her.
Tomorrow is the mens Skiercross event and it should be another beauty as the weather forecast is looking great for the entire weekend. Errol Kerr & Darren Rahlves will be out there representing Truckee once again. Come out and join the fun and all the concert event that will be going on in the Village after the competitions.

Today was a full day. Pretty much every event was having practice and every one of the athletes was soaking up the sunshine. Errol & Nate were on the X Course today trying to dial in the long & technical course. Skiers really didn't have a problem with the course today but the snowboarders were coming up a tad short on some of the step ups & more difficult sections. Nate, Seth Wescott & the Palm were having no trouble at all as I was able to catch a glimpse of their runs. I think the course definitely had the women competitors psyched out a bit.
Errol Kerr is a funny guy. First off lets mention that Errol got into this event the hard way....no corporate sponsor, no tech to juice up his skis & just an underdog from the start. He had a strong showing at the Jeep Tour event coming in 2nd to Darren Rahlves in the time trials. He impressed the US coaches and with a strong showing at the Jeep Tour, earned himself a spot on the US Team. He's my kinda guy...DIY all the way. Anyways, back to being funny. OK yesterday you saw the many hats of Errol. Today he was running this fleece scarf that looked like you aunt Mimi would give you and you wear it once for the holidays just to please her cause your mom said so(See photos). He also had this long down coat down to his ankles?????!!!! Didn't get a shot of it, but I'll try to get one manana. Let's not forget his old faded orange Rousch mittens....classic.
In the U-ditch world, qualifiers took place tonight. Sean Field was in the mix and he just got in. He qualified 10th and was right on the bubble. Tanner Hall was destroying the pipe once again with super smooth style and techy steeze. Someone has got to come up with something spectacular cause I think Tanner has gotten into everyone's head....I know that Dumont is going to put up a fight but he has to control himself and nail his runs.
Off to bed...I'm wiped.

Side Note: Just saw four of my photos being used here in the airport on huge light box billboards. Funny thing is, I didn't receive a dime for them. I know how they got them though...courtesy of the UNR photo dept. No photo credit either. Stoked! Issue to be resolved at a later date.
Well enough bitching and on to the X Games.....the flight attendant dude just called my name for seat verification and murdered my last name. Yow!

NATE HOLLAND TAKES GOLD! XGames Jan 27, 2007
Nate Holland owned the BX course yesterday! He was smooth, relaxed, aggresive and damn fast! Being up at the start of that course was intense. The final was stacked with the Palm, Wescott, Paul, Xavier, Huser and Nate. The racers were constantly pshycing themselves up and the techs were always on the lookout to what would give their racer that special extra edge. Nates Tech, Curtis was a magician keeping Nate fast throughout the day. Nate's speed was evident once he turned on the jets and passed Palm on the section after the double jumps. After that, it was game over. No one could catch him. Congratulations to Nate and also to Nate's Brother Pat making a strong showing and making it to the consolation final.Yesterday was a busy day with both mens and womens BX finals, Mens & Womens Slopestyle finals, Mens 1/2 pipe qualifiers, SnowCross finals and Monoski finals. Mr. Finch was busy making apperances and there are some great photos of what went down during his appearances. Anyway, I'm back out to the hillto get some more coverage. Tonight Mens 1/2 Pipe final.

My First Day at Xgames 1/24/07

Boy am I tired! Operating on an hour and a half of sleep to bring you my little insight on Winter X Games 11. Don't worry, I'll be here till the end to give you the skinny on whats going on with X and with our Porters Athletes who have been invited to X. Invites include Andy Finch, Michelle Parker, and Nate Holland. Today was the qualifiers for the womens 1/2 pipe and boy, the cold once again took its toll on me. Me thinky a little sicky. So in response to the cold, I proceeded to watch the qualifiers from the riders lounge with Mike Goldschmidt. Nice and warm, on the couch, and with hot chocolate in hand. Here's a few picks for you to view cause I really gotta get some sleep. Big week coming up and I promise to give you a little more insight
