Going Down Big Mt. Shasta 6/15/08

The skiing around the lake has really turned to crap over the past couple weeks. The gate up to the fourth of July chutes finally opened last friday, and if you missed it don't worry. Since the first couple times I rode my bike up there the snow has gotten progressively less smooth...imagine that. So, usually about once a year I try to ski Mount Shasta. It usually happens anywhere from mid May to mid June. This year it just happened to be yesterday.

For those of you who have never been up there, its really a pretty amazing mountain. It is one of about fifteen 14,000+ foot peaks in the state of California, and probably one of the most straightforward and easy to climb. Most of the trailheads sit somehwere between six and seven thousand feet, so getting to the 14,162 foot summit still takes quite a bit of effort.

After making the super last minute decision to go up there we got the crew together and left Tahoe City at about 8:30 Saturday night. With gas prices being completely through the roof like they are we went ahead and packed in all our crap and 4 people in the same rig and started driving. We arrived the Brewer Creek Trailhead on the east side of the mountain at 2 am, unrolled the sleeping bags and a got about three hours of sleep. We woke up at 5 and threw all of our stuff together and we were on our way about 5:30 am. The smokey haze in the air made for a ridiculously red sunrise. Starting from the car at 7,200 feet we were looking at about a 7,000 foot hike, no problem.

The ascent route up the east side is very straightforward. Basically you hike in a straightline for the summit the entire way. The route starts you on a glacier between the Hotlum and Wintun glaciers, and eventually you cross a moraine onto the Wintun glacier for the top 1,500 vert or so. For those of you who have never hiked 7,000 feet in a day, it is hard, and painful, but that's kinda the point. So what was a guy to do, maybe go for a new personal best time to get up there, why not... Topping out at 10:30 am on the summit without a breath of wind was pretty outstanding, especially because the first 4,00 feet of my ski run was going to be steep, uninterrupted, smooth corn. That's right, I'm talking 4 grand right off the top. There's hardly anywhere else you can go skiing around here right now, but above 10,000 feet on Shasta is where its at. So we dropped in around 11 am and skied the crap out of it. Getting down to the bottom of the Wintun glacier we couldn't even believe how smooth and long the run was... then the skiing got interesting. In my haste to get to the top I neglected to notice how huge and plentiful the suncups were down near the bottom. From 10,000 feet down you could ski, but it wasn't pretty.

Overall it was a pretty unbelievable day, I got to ski a side of the mountain that I'd only looked down from the top, and the skiing that mattered was spectacularly good considering the skiing I've done over the past couple months. If you plan to go, just remember that the mountain is huge, really big, and the bottom is gonna suck but the top will make it all worth it.
Jeremy

This pic was taken about 20 minutes into the hike, our route is straight for the top from here, ascending the obvious snow filled gully just lookers left at the top.

This shot is from about halfway, notice all the wacky smoke haze in the sky. This is where it starts to hurt.

Standing on the summit, the trailhead is just down in the trees about where the snow runs out.

A shot of the whole mountain. Our route is from right off the summit, and straight down, the lower 3,000 feet or so is obscured by the trees.

Ski Base Mission Day 1

I made it to norway and we drove straight to the mountains, after my flight landed at 9 pm. TomErik, Espen Per and the rest of Molde base have been the usual entertaining hosts

Here is a shot of our first day on our ski base mission. we just built the jump and bailed off the cliff without skis as to make it down to the valley before the fog bank that was coming fast! the shot is of me espen and Tom erik.

today was even more interesting, guys going off with vintage Norwegian sleds, snow racers (kid trikes with skis) and of course skis. winds were bad, winds were good, played a little game of spot the gust here and had another long day in the mountains that made the beer taste great.

signing off for now.

regards and thanks all for the support, the ski base stuff we are and will be capturing will be sweet! we have a first decent in mind off of the trollstigen and some more silliness for gridset cliff. I feel i need to spend some more time in the winter moths here to take down some of the insane big mountain lines that are staring at us. big big rad lines ending with and without big parachutable cliffs. this place RULES.

later

Chappy's Daily Alaska Heli & Sled Lovefest 2008 - Day 13

If you believe in any form of a Heaven – I swear that we were there today. Think of taking the stretch of Sierra Nevada mountains from Sugar Bowl to Anderson Peak to Tinker Knob and then scooping up all of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows and continuing right on past Twin Peaks and through Blackwood Canyon and down to Homewood. Now think if that stretch had ZERO trees on it and how differently you’d ride each and every feature and spine and chute and cornice and headwall between those four ski resorts and all the downright delicious backcountry terrain in between. Then put it all on steroids. And quite often we’re talking A LOT of steroids. Chute 75? Munchkins? The Palisades? How ‘bout all three in the SAME run…….twice over……and only a dozen other people you have to share it with…..oh yeah…..and you have a helicopter as your private chair lift?!

Be on the lookout for tomorrow’s post as I finally got my V.I.O. helmet cam situation straightened out and am planning on going out with it today….
And happy April 20th for those counting!

2008 Skiing Magazine Ski test, days 1 and 2

Hey, Jeremy Benson here reporting from the 2008 Skiing Magazine Ski test from Snowbird, Utah. Blue skies and cold snow have dominated the forecast for the past couple days, giving us perfect conditions to test out all the new skis for next season. Snowbird ski resort is the perfect venue to host such an event, with big vertical, steep varied terrain, and fast chairs to help us lap it up on all the different skis. This is my second consecutive year as a ski tester, and this year I'm skiing on the "Big Mountain Expert" skis(pretty much everyday skis for west coast rippers), and "One Ski Quiver Advanced" skis(more like everyday skis for those who actually ski on groomers sometimes).

Being a tester in both these categories means that I'll be testing out 56 different pairs of skis in about 4 days. These first two days I've been mixing it up on the Big Mountain Expert skis, with all the major manufacturers represented. So far I've skied on 25 pairs, with brands like Elan, Dynastar, Rossignol, K2, Line, Fischer, Fatypus, Scott, Black Diamond, Nordica, Volkl, Head, and Salomon, all making sweet new big mountain fatties for next year. Every ski performs a little differently, so switching it up so often definitely keeps you on your toes.

To even the playing field a little I try and take a very similar run every time, as long as my run is pretty consistent I can feel the subtle differences of the different shapes and flexes of the skis. With all these tester skis, you might ask, how many times have you completely rag dolled out of a small air in the hardpack because of your demo bindings? Thankfully just once, but it was right under the lift and I got heckled as I should have.

Other testers this year include, Jaime Pierre, Drew Stoecklien, Griffin Post, Lynn Kennen, Charlotte Moats, Jenn Berg, Jeff Annetts, Dan "the Withey wave" Withey, Sven Brunso, and the Skiing Magazine staff.

That's all for now, time to crack a beer and put my feet up, only 31 more pairs of skis to go...

The Look Back & Slash!

There are lots of different tricks you can do while snowboarding and skiing. On a powder day, my most favorite thing to do, as it may be yours as well, is looking back at all that spray your slash has created! Every slash has it's own power and glory. Depending on the snow consistency, you can get various types of spray. Light & fluffy, thick & chunky or backlight and beautiful. Here's a few slashes I did yesterday that I'd like to share with you all. Yes I'm stuck behind the desk this morning on this beautiful bluebird day......GO OUT AND GET SOME!

February 1st 2008 SQUAW VALLEY

Squaw Valley USA
Armada Skis
K2 Gyrator
Snowboard
Snow Ski
Lake Tahoe
Snowboard

How many days can we keep talking about pow pow in Tahoe? Is that real question? I was lucky enough to reach the KT line this morning before to many others had arrived in the Valley which allowed me to relax and enjoy the thunderous sounds of explosions all around the mountain. I was surprised at how may bombs they were throwing this morning since it didn't seem like last night was such a large snow event. With a slightly late opening due to ongoing snow safety we all raced as usual to get on chairs and find our lines. As I rode up and started taking pictures I heard a familiar voice and as random squallyworld goes John Huston from our TC store was sitting next to me, its so hard to tell who people are when you're all bundled up. John was rocking the Armada ARG skis and sitting a few chairs behind us was Kyle from the Truckee store spending some time on the K2 Gyrator store demo. Being on the right equipment on a pow pow day is vital and you can always tell who is having more fun than the next guy mainly from know how to choose correctly from the quiver. Huston mentioned that the ARG's were perfect for todays snow conditions but to me they are still funny looking skis. So were started off on KT going towards the alternate chutes but opted for 75 chute instead. Next I hit up tower 16 followed by the sun chutes. And on a hunch me and a my buddy Brahma headed toward the Resort at Squaw Creek and amazingly nobody tracked much of it out. The snow was amazing and should be for days to come and another storm is lined up to hit us Saturday night!!

Xgame Day 5

The Battle Continues

Does big and gnarly beat techy & smooth? Techy and smooth wins again in
the Judges eye by .33 of a point. Tanner Hall once again defeats Simon Dumont in
the Skiing Mens halfpipe finals. Tanner won the judges, but Dumont won the
crowd. I have never in my life seen a crowd boo as hard as they did....they were
even throwing snowballs up at the judges stand! It was that intense. I have no
idea of how to even explain this one....Tanner was booed by the crowd on his
victory lap down! Now, lets just get this out of the way...of course both of
these athletes are on a totally different level in the halfpipe than their peers
and it's obvious these two are pushing the sport of halfpipe skiing. Each one of
them takes great pride in what they do and they have spent countless hours and
dedication to get their level to where it is. Both should be commended and I
think to really settle this sucker....they should have had a game of SKI...just
like a game of SKATE or HORSE. I do a trick you match it...simple. Blow the
trick you get a letter and if you spell the game ...done.

I don't think Tanner should have been booed by the crowd....really wasn't
necessary. If the crowd felt that way they should have just been quiet or golf
clapped. Same message just not as degrading and maybe a more powerful statement.
I personally like big and gnarly but it is and has always been up to the judges
to decide. I thought both runs were great...Tanner almost makes things look too
easy even though the things he is doing are super dificult. On the other end of
the spectrum, Dumont looks like he's on the verge of death! There is that fine
line of control and recklessness that brings out emotion and the crowd really
feeds on that emotion.

I remeber back in the early 90's during snowboard halfpipe contests where
everyone would say that "The Judging Sucks!" Snowboardings answer was,
boardercross...but as time has shown, it really wasn't an answer. It just
created another event. So what needs to be done? Who knows....both guys rip!

At the end of the night when they were escorting Tanner to the podium, I ran
into him and told him good job, congratulations and we exchanged knuckles. Hell,
he just won X Games, again. The look in his face was quite apprehensive and
confused. I really would like to have known what was going on in his head, but
other people were congratulating him as well and his demeanor was not that of
excitement. I think the negative energy of the booing really affected him.
Strange, but interesting.

Day 3 at the Xgames

Today was a full day. Pretty much every event was having practice and every one of the athletes was soaking up the sunshine. Errol & Nate were on the X Course today trying to dial in the long & technical course. Skiers really didn't have a problem with the course today but the snowboarders were coming up a tad short on some of the step ups & more difficult sections. Nate, Seth Wescott & the Palm were having no trouble at all as I was able to catch a glimpse of their runs. I think the course definitely had the women competitors psyched out a bit.

Errol Kerr is a funny guy. First off lets mention that Errol got into this event the hard way....no corporate sponsor, no tech to juice up his skis & just an underdog from the start. He had a strong showing at the Jeep Tour event coming in 2nd to Darren Rahlves in the time trials. He impressed the US coaches and with a strong showing at the Jeep Tour, earned himself a spot on the US Team. He's my kinda guy...DIY all the way. Anyways, back to being funny. OK yesterday you saw the many hats of Errol. Today he was running this fleece scarf that looked like you aunt Mimi would give you and you wear it once for the holidays just to please her cause your mom said so(See photos). He also had this long down coat down to his ankles?????!!!! Didn't get a shot of it, but I'll try to get one manana. Let's not forget his old faded orange Rousch mittens....classic.

In the U-ditch world, qualifiers took place tonight. Sean Field was in the mix and he just got in. He qualified 10th and was right on the bubble. Tanner Hall was destroying the pipe once again with super smooth style and techy steeze. Someone has got to come up with something spectacular cause I think Tanner has gotten into everyone's head....I know that Dumont is going to put up a fight but he has to control himself and nail his runs.

Off to bed...I'm wiped.

Queen's Cup

www.queenscupopen.com

This weekend (Feb. 3-4th) be sure to check out the Queen's Cup in Park City, Utah. It will be the second annual all women's slopestyle and halfpipe event. Last year it was an eye opener for many and this year it's going to go off. The event get's plenty of coverage so if you aren't in the area, you'll be able to check it out elsewhere. Being the first all girl's ski event, it has been designed to bring more females into the sport. There are 15 invited pros who team up with 4 amature riders each and compete as a team. Last year the after party went down with DJ Marc Frank and DJ Knuckles, this year Swollen Members will kick it off. If you're a chick...might be too late to get in, but check the website for next year's event.

Tahoe Snow Update

I have a second job teaching snowboarding at Squaw Valley USA on the weekends so from time to time I can give some on the snow updates and I was rather surprised by the snow quality today. I guess let me clarify that a bit, there is still some great snow out there but its in some difficult areas. Granite still has some great chalky snow but I think alot of people get scared away due to the over all difficulty of the current state of the run. There are no groomers for easy decent but if you have the skills then its one of the best areas we found today.

Another strong area is KT, with 75 chute having some great pockets of snow all the way down. Again no real easy way down so it deters many of the weekend warriors away from the run. To kinda sum it all up, their still is alot of great snow in Tahoe to be found but you need to realize your limits and not push beyond them. Save yourself till the good stuff flies again, but if you can chance it, try some of the good north facing runs for great cold chalky snow.
