TWO AREAS OF LOW PRESSURE WILL AFFECT THE REGION THIS WEEK. THE
FIRST ARRIVES TUESDAY AND THE SECOND BY LATE THANKSGIVING DAY INTO
EARLY FRIDAY.
RAIN AND SNOW WITH THE FIRST SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO REACH THE
CENTRAL SIERRA ON TUESDAY AND SPREAD INTO WESTERN NEVADA ON
TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY AS THE LOW MOVES ONSHORE. THIS SYSTEM
WILL BRING DOWN SNOW LEVELS TO 5500 TO 6000 FEET ACROSS THE
REGION FOR TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR
SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THE SIERRA SOUTH OF LAKE TAHOE
TO MAMMOTH LAKES.
THE TRACK OF THE SECOND SYSTEM REMAINS QUITE UNCERTAIN AS IT DROPS
OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA. FORECAST MODELS ARE INDICATING THIS
SYSTEM COULD MOVE SOUTH ALONG THE SIERRA OR REMAIN JUST OFF THE
CALIFORNIA COAST. HOWEVER CONFIDENCE THAT THE STORM WILL AFFECT THE
AREA LATE THANKSGIVING DAY OR EARLY FRIDAY IS INCREASING. FORECAST
MODELS INDICATE THE SYSTEM MAY LINGER OVER THE REGION INTO SATURDAY...
WITH COLD AND MOIST CONDITIONS. SNOW LEVELS MAY DROP BELOW 5000
FEET IF THE STORM MOVES SOUTH ALONG THE SIERRA WHILE SNOW LEVELS
WOULD BE HIGHER IF THE SYSTEM REMAINS OFFSHORE. THE MOST LIKELY
TIME FRAME FOR POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT SNOWS IN THE SIERRA IS FROM LATE
THANKSGIVING DAY INTO FRIDAY. LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS MAY BE POSSIBLE
FOR ELEVATIONS BELOW 5500 FEET...INCLUDING PORTIONS OF WESTERN
NEVADA.
IF YOU HAVE TRAVEL PLANS FOR THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY IN THE
SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA...BE PREPARED FOR WINTER DRIVING
CONDITIONS. CHECK OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV/RENO FOR UPDATES
ON HOW THESE STORMS MAY IMPACT HOLIDAY TRAVEL.

GOOD MORNING TO SNOW!! So hopefully everyone is making out to the polls safely this morning. If you live in the Tahoe area you were greeted with a treat of our first real snowfall. Not that this will be enough to get any of the resorts firing up the lifts but rumor has it that Boreal may have a go at it this Friday. We will keep you posted as Shaydar teases us with Tahoe's first resort to open as they usually do. Hopefully once we get some blue back in the sky later today we can go out and snap some updated shots... just to make you drool!

On my drive in this morning I had to pull over and snap this shot of Northstar, hopefully the storm will track our way and help Tahoe start this season off right!

Here are a few pics of the Lake Tahoe and the snow that I took this morning. The steam coming of the lake is so eerie!

First Dusting of Snow - 10-04-08
Regardless, snow is snow.....and it got me excited to go see some of it first hand. I had some errands to run in Reno, so I went the long-way around by driving up the Mt. Rose highway. I pulled over about halfway up for a quick shot across to the southwest corner of Lake Tahoe. In the picture below, you can see Mt. Tallac and the Desolation Wilderness way off in the distance.

So then I continued on up Mt. Rose highway to the pass - the highest year-round, open road in the Sierras at almost 9,000 feet. I finally caught up to some white stuff I could actually touch 'n feel...

Holy poo that was a good find chappy!
When does skiing typically start at Mt. Rose? I'll be there on a business trip last week of October and I am hoping for some skiing action...
Anonymous: If you cross your fingers and do the snow dance maybe we might start seeing resorts open but I really doubt they will be open that early. Usually Boreal is the first followed by Northstar and Squaw.
