Let's Send Iris to AK!!

This winter I have been competing in the NorthFace Masters. I have had consistent solid performances in the Masters. That has earned my invitation from Nick Perata to compete in The King of The Hill during Tailgate Alaska in Valdez, April 3-11. I am pursuing my dreams and passion snowboarding in this event, I am so excited to represent Tahoe and shred like I do here! I'm so grateful for my sponsors support of gear and limited travel funds to help make this happen, but I really need the most important support of my home town to really make it a reality. I'm raffling off all my extra gear, donated prizes from local resorts and businesses and a day of private coaching with myself at Squaw Valley USA. BassHeavy drops sweet beats and good vibes every Thursday, so come out, have a good time, support, get some raffle tickets and win some gear this Thursday, March 18 at Bar of America and next Thursday, March 25 at Lanza's. Big thanks in advance for your support and huge thanks to my sponsors, Signal, Smith, Porterstahoe.com, O'neill, Bula and Squaw Valley USA.

No Regrets in Silverado
This is me getting a couple of sweeeeet laps on Silverado on Feb. 25th, 2010, with NO ONE around. This was one of my favorite days of the season. I literally only skied Silverado all day. Never done that before, and I certainly don't regret it.

It is a sad day... Goodbye CR Johnson
![]() |
| From Fliers |
It is with a heavy heart that I write this post. Today Cr Johnson passed away at Squaw Valley. I do not know all the details but two Porters team members, Jt Holmes and Timy Dutton have confirmed that CR hit his head on a rock off Light Towers on Headwall at Squaw Valley. Chappy spoke with Jt and he said that CR had the biggest smile and best attitude for the ski season. Anyone that personally knew CR and even those that are fans of CR knew what he had overcome to be the caliber of skier he was. Our hearts and thoughts are with CR's family and close friends. R.I.P friend.

oh my god. What a tragedy....CR ruled...I remember him doing crazy spins as a young teenager. Much love to his close friends and family. I am so sorry for your loss.
we'll miss ya CR.
we'll miss ya CR.
I have watching CR rip it up in ski movies over the years, and followed his sucess. The guy was a ski legend and rocked on skis. I am absolutely shocked about the news. R.I.P , my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Wanna Ski with Cody and Elyse??
This coming March Chugach Powder Guides is hosting an Epic Athlete Experience with Cody and I! I am very excited to have this opportunity. We get to go heli-skiing with clients, not as guides but as athletes. We will be based out of Girdwood and there is a 5 day or 7 day package available. I think Girdwood is one of the best possible situations for heli-skiing for so many reasons. First off, Girdwood is one of the coolest towns in Alaska, with lots of good restaurants (Double Musky here I come!) and interesting people to mingle with. Secondly, if we can't fly we get to go Snowcat skiing. CPG recently opened 500 more acres for cat skiing in addition to upgrading to a new, super posh cat. I actually got to experience this cat skiing last winter. It was a blast and totally worthy! Thirdly, there is Alyeska Resort, one of the best ski resorts in the world, at your disposal for down days as well. But down days in Girdwood with CPG are fairly rare, only once has a group be unable to get in a helicopter in their 13 year history. No other heli-operation in Alaska has it this good! If this is something that interests you click here to view more info on the CODY TOWNSEND & ELYSE SAUGSTAD HELI-SKI EXPERIENCE. Hopefully we'll being seeing you there...

Tahoe's swing scene

After some convincing, I was able to get Ruthy to see how much fun can be had in the local swing scene. I have been swinging for a bit longer than Ruth, and I have found the scene very welcoming and the experiences rewarding. My friend and neighbor, Doug, introduced me to swinging. He is really into it, he has swing parties and stuff and swings with all sorts of people in the neighborhood, he swings with men and women and even reaches out to other neighborhoods. It is really a blast. I did not realize all this was going on around me until one day, over at Dougs house, I just opened my mind to it, ignored all the stigma it carries and gave it a try. Here is some video of Ruth, and some photos of us and our swinging friends.

I want to be a "Swinger"...........looks rad
it's a little scary to open your mind to swinging, but once you do it's a great way to have fun with all your friends.

Check Out The New Snow In Tahoe
The view never gets old even years and now decades after my first time up there. The wind was whipping pretty good and you could see white caps all over Lake Tahoe. You also get such an awesome view looking across the Truckee River / 89 valley over to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Castle Peak is always worth pausing for a few moments as well.
Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows looking across the Truckee River / 89 valley from the top of Mount Watson above Tahoe City

Castle Peak off in the distance...again a view from the top of Mount Watson

A windy Lake Tahoe looking towards the east shore from Mount Watson

Snowy white goodness...just a big storm away from being able to shred

The Tahoe sunshine peaking through the snowy trees

Pine needles soaking in fresh snow just off the "fiberboard freeway"

Standard Films "Black Winter" Premier
On a side note, another part of the video premier was a benefit for the Make a Wish Foundation. Chas Guldemonds lovely lady Drea organized a raffle to benefit the foundation. Sponsors who donated prized were Electric Eyewear, Rockstar Energy Drink, DC Snowboards and of course PortersTahoe.com. Grand prizes included a DC snowboard and a $499.00 setup from Porterstahoe.com. Two stoked winners went away with that loot and Make a Wish Foundation saw over $500.00 in charitable donations!
On the video front, there was some technical snowboard mastery exhibited by Torstien Horgmo, Chas Guldemond, Ben Lynch, Leanne Pelosi and some new young bucks. Big mountain segments were tackled in manly form by Xavier Delerue and Lonnie Kauck. Get the video and check it out. It hasn't shipped yet so please stayed tuned and we'll let ya know when it finally arrives.

Monster de Mayo Pool Party
After a day in the sun and the park we headed up to the Pool party that was sponsored by Monster Energy drink. The athletes got in their boardshorts and started to enjoy the drinks, beats and hot tub and pool. Around 4:15 one of the girls that works for Squaw at the pool started asking people to get out of the hot tub...one of the athletes, I believe it was Peter Olenick, decided he didn't want to get out and decided that she needed get in. She ended up in the tub with all her clothes on...poor girl. If you can make it up for Squaw last weekend for the 2008-2009 season, do it because there is nothing better then a morning of spring skiing or snowboarding and an afternoon of hot tubbing, swimming and beer at the top of Squaw.

Why I love Squaw Valley in the Spring Time...
Even though we all love to get in as much powder as we can until the month of May, it never hurts to have those hot Cali spring days where the sun comes out, the snow turns to corn and the sunbathing at the High Camp pool after a morning of skiing is game on. Can't beat it!

Spring!!!
Obviously spring is here, and the skiing has been pretty good. There's been great turns to be had at Alpine Meadows and Squaw, but the backcountry is where its at. With the sun getting higher in the sky everyday the options for sun softened snow are really opening up. Between trips down to the east side I've been having fun skiing all over in the Tahoe BC. It was looking like the south side of Jakes was about to melt out for the season so my friend Oscar and I cruised out there for a couple laps yesterday. It is smooth, but going fast, so if you're stoked to get out for some spring backcountry, its a "the sooner the better" situation. Here's a shot from yesterday's mission, I know that any in-shape fifty year old could ski this, but I had fun anyway. Check out the crazy wind affect on the bay...

Freeride World Tour Venue Photos
I tweaked my ankle early in the morning on the day of the big comp, so I couldn't be there personally to shoot. However, local photo dude Josh Anderson came through for me with some shots of the venue and riding. Check out the slideshow below, and pray we get a weather window for a day two on the big rock pile. In the words of Cody Townsend, who currently sits in fourth, "The Tram Face will separate the men from the boys!"

Elyse wins Day One on Tram Face
Here's what Elyse has to say about stop number two of the Freeride World Tour:
"I would like to update you on how the Freeride World Tour in Squaw Valley is going. Earlier in the week Squaw was unfortunate enough to receive a bit of rain, which completely ruined the Tram Face that we were to compete on. The only way we were (are) going to compete on the infamous face is to receive at least another foot of snow. Since yesterday was forecasted as the only possible blue day during our event's waiting period, the organizers acted quickly and decided to take advantage of the situation and moved the event to an area at Squaw called Silverado. With sunny skies and and a few inches of Sierra butter on an already smooth face, the event went off with a bang. The men went first and holy cow did we some amazing skiing and snowboarding go down. The women were to follow the men, and as I had drawn first for the females in the bib draw I felt the need to continue the superb level of skiing and show that the women are able to keep up with the men. My run was fast, smooth, and had 3 nice sized airs throughout. My run was so much fun, I was completely stoked when I came through the finish! It wouldn't have even mattered where I finished in the placings, runs like that are what we live for.
Wonderfully I ended up in 1st place, and with a bit of a lead in the points I have a nice cushion going into the Tram Face. As the situation lies now, we are expecting a storm in the next fews and are hoping to receive enough snow that the Tram Face will become possible to ride. We will wait out the rest of our waiting period, which lasts until March 5th, and hopefully get to ride what I have been staring at and dreaming about for the past few years."
Here's what the tour has to say about her run:
"The women truly impressed the spectators present at the bottom of the face, especially the Freeride World Champion 2008, Elyse Saugstad. She won the women’s ski competition hands down with a fast run that could have competed with the men."
And here's what you're all waiting for anyway, the video. Elyse's run is at 5:05

Squaw Valley Pow Explosion of Fun
Question... Where did everyone go? Why was there no lines at Squaw today?
Why did I have enough time to take my time getting to granite this morning and still hike to the peak and get first tracks down between the 2 buttresses?
I really don't care what the answer is, all I know is that I had waist deep turns down granite... Yeah that's right and it seems that everybody didn't think today was going to be any good. I was able to walk up to the funitel at about 9:05am and walk right into the first car that went by with no pushing or shoving. I made my way towards Shirley Lake and made a quick run down the Tree run 5. Check the video above for the run through the trees. Then hit granite for an epic peak decent... WAIST DEEP and I rode my 155 rockered Smokin today. This was some of the lightest and deepest snow that I have seen in a while. I went from Granite to a little Sun Chute diversion and was really surprised that it wasn't as bony as I thought it was going to be. We headed towards Headwall chair and hit up the various zones below the chair, including the Bullet, Sun Bowl and hogsback. The day ended with some fun times off the Siberia ridge to more faceshots... The morel of the posting is that you should stay and take a chance, well that and if you live here what happened this morning? I mean its not like is was superbowl sunday or a major party weekend....

0-60 in typical Tahoe Fashion

When I was fixing a flat tire on my mountain bike last friday I had no idea the dumping that we were in for. The weather looked promising at the time, but at no point did it mention that we'd have 4 feet of new snow in three days. The fresh 40+ inch layer of superlight fluff has turned my dreams into a reality and I've gotten face shots for the past three days. It looks like Alpine Meadows will be open top to bottom starting Friday, and people who skied at Squaw today said that it was "pretty freaking good". I've been taking full advantage of the hiking opportunities and getting fresh lines down pretty much whatever I want thanks to my Marker Dukes, while trying not to get too deep into the snow. We did get plastered, but its pretty much all the snow we've got, so pay attention and be careful out there. There are snow snakes aplenty out there right now, so stay light on your feet and keep your tips up. Significant settling has occurred over the past several days, so the bottom has become more difficult to find, but not that difficult. Looks like there is more on the way, so get ready to shred pow until you can't even stand up. For information on avalanche conditions check out www.sierraavalanchecenter.org. Have fun, and see you out there.

Andy Finch latest....

Its that time of the year again, getting ready for the snow, the travels, the pumpkin pies and the busy-ness of the day in the life of a snowboarder...and his wife! I wanted to send you an update on where and what Mr. Finch has been up to lately.
Andy along with JJ, Keir and some other guys went over to Switzerland to get top 30. With two practice runs, one qualifying run, and the worse conditions imaginable...ironically they ended up 13th (andy), 14th and 15th, just happily missing the final (only top 12). Step one of the road to the Olympics accomplished!
With the snow already fallen here, Andy has gotten a couple of days in at Boreal, starting his season off locally.
This past weekend, Andy played waiter at a celebrity charity dinner at Mamasakes in Squaw Valley. Of course everyone tipped huge, (had nothing to do with the money going to the local schools)..it was strictly because of Andys excellent service and positive attitude...
Andy has been working with the Summer Dew Tour and is getting ready to kick off this season with the first winter event going down in Breckenridge in December. This tour will be receiving live coverage by NBC and also multiple shows on MTV, so make sure to check it out. Heres the link, check out Andys front page interview! http://www.ast.com/

MSP's "Claim" Movie Premier in Squallywood

Matchstick Productions (MSP) premiere of the new movie "Claim" went down Saturday night in the old Olympic Village Lodge in Squaw Valley USA. The recent cold weather and dusting of snow brought the skier kids out in droves. MSP always packs the house for both the family-friendly early showing as well as the sold-out later one. This year most of the pros that live in Olympic Valley that are normally in MSP's films were out of town at other various locals. A small crew of Porters employees was able to meet up during the first showing at Blue Coyote in the valley with Porters ski team rider, Squaw Valley legend, and Nordica and Sessions athlete JT Holmes. Always good times....

The line waiting to get in to Olympic Village Lodge was thick and long...

Check it....the Moment Skis crew piling in with everyone else...

Airblaster's August and Think Thank's Stack Footy
It was a dark and stormy night in Squaw Valley but that didn't stop the kiddies from coming out to Mamasake to see Think Thank's Stack Footy and Airblaster's August movies. Mamasake was packed to the hilt and everyone was excited because the temp dropped and the winter jackets and beanies came out of the closet.... perfect attire for snowboard movie premieres.
Think Thank's Stack Footy was a great vid with crazy urban shredding, big park jump lines and fresh powder turns. The pants were tight but so was the riding in this vid. After the showing of Stack Footy there was a little raffle and then Ariblaster/ Thirty Two rep Eric Wallis hit play and "August" was off and running. Now for those that don't know "August" was filmed entirely at Mt.Hood during the first two weeks of August this year. I have to say this is a fresh new concept to the snowboard film industry because usually a movie is filmed through out an entire season, not just in two weeks. So for starters I liked that about the movie. Second it was full of fun jibbing and fun everything. A big thanks to all that came out and braved the monsoon at Squaw and a big thanks to Mamasake

Segal's Bash
In hindsight, we should have seen it coming. Sunday night had all the ingredients for an wild party: full moon, Segal’s going away party, costumes, alcohol, and a Porters staff ready to unleash the fury after a long retail summer. In hindsight, we should have closed the entire company down on Monday, as most employees looked like extras from a zombie movie. But then, hindsight is 20/20, and without the benefit of hindsight, sometimes you just need to dive head-first into a blinding maelstrom of booze, dancing, and fake blood.
(30 Irish Carbombs x 3) + 20 carbombs = 110 car bombs, an Auld Dubliner record, by far. And this occurred in the first 30 minutes of the night.
Not that some employees even remembered the first 30 minutes. Nicky B. and Finn, fresh off a 3-day bender in Reno, came dressed to the nine’s and ready to party. Finn, slumped at the bar and helpless to stand up, had a religious experience when Chappy started brining him a continuous flow of chicken wings. “I think… he’s an angel” Finn whispered with the reverence of a true believer.
Harley checked ID’s with his infrared ear-light while ski bunny Eleanor danced the night away with Nicky B. Kathy joined them on the dance floor, along with Miller, Yonto, and many others. Faithful Line rep Matt Connelly provided classy tunes while looking quite classy in a double Polo combo with collars up.
At one point I told Jeremy Nobis “Hi I’m John Segal from Porters. I think you could really make it in this industry, someday. Maybe even be an A-list guy, maybe. All you’re missing, I think, are these magical Superfeet Kork footbeds.” Then I started sniffing a footbed lovingly. Nobis seemed confused by this.
Chappy won best costume by a landslide, even improving his outfit throughout the night by tearing nipple-vents in his vintage Polo shirt. Two pastel cable-knit sweaters were later discovered on the Burton van, covered in dirt, holes, and blood.
Segal himself was having a blast, clearly, all night. In fact, he even did his own Segal impression by losing his cell phone. What a showman that guy is! His lady-friend Christina looked splendid in a T-Rex tail. She even received some sage love advice from Harley, who said “your relationship can only rise as high as your level of communication.” You know what? He’s right! We love this man.
Alex, never one to dress up, pulled out all the stops with a bag full of Segal tributes. Surrounded by drunks, he tried his best to properly roast Segal. Screams of “Blink 182 in South Lake!!!” and “downsize grandma!” and “the toilet’s clogged again!” rained down from the crowd. Broken Volant Spatulas served as awards.
In the end, the best Segal tribute happened the next day, when the entire company was late to work and completely hung over. Finn even spent some quality time in the bathroom. Now if that doesn’t remind you of Segal, nothing will.

Squaw Valley Hosts Standard Films AESTHETICA and After Party by FORTRESS
For the first time in years, filmmakers Dave and Mike Hatchett of TB snowboarding fame decided to have the world premiere of Standard Films new AESTHETICA right here in Squaw Valley instead of down in San Diego during the ASR (Action Sports Retailers) trade show.
The doors at Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley opened at 7:30 last night with the movie set to kick off at 8:30. Fuel TV was on hand filming and reporting from the event. The Fuel TV reporters for the night were Tina Dixon and lifetime "Hall of Fame" Porters team rider and legend Jim Rippey. Other sponsors for the night were Porters Lake Tahoe, VAS Entertainment and Squaw Valley USA. As the clock edged towards show time the line to get in was spreading into the parking lot. Soon a roar of applause erupted from inside Olympic Village Lodge. Show time for the first snowboarding movie of the season!
Once inside it was shoulder to shoulder and there was standing room only to watch AESTHETICA. The way that the lodge is laid out gave everyone in every corner a view of Standard's new movie release. Some highlights of AETHETICA included big mountain legend Johan Olofsson's unveiling of Burton’s Nofish...and he was killing the steep and deeps on this bindingless wonder. Also recent Burton Australian Open winner Torstein Horgmo had some amazing shots at Homewood ski resort on the west shore of Lake Tahoe as well as the monster spring jump at Alpine Meadows. Another favorite was Mads Johnsson's part with plenty of fresh powder and steeps. For the rail junkies there was enough urban shredding to feed that need.
To kick off the second half of the night Fortress came out to do some good old metal head banging. Fortress was formed in the early 1990's in Lake Tahoe melding guitar solos by legendary Dave Hatchett, head banging guitarist Brian Harrison, bass by Mike Hatchett and insane drums by Rob Jaeger. Well a little Judas Priest mixed in with some Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slayer had everyone fist pumping, crowd surfing and beer drinking. But the fun didn't stop there. Nope, for those that weathered the onslaught of metal, the reward was a special guest appearance by singer Whitfield Crane of the old Ugly Kid Joe. Their cover of Ozzy Osbourne's "Mr. Crowley" was awesome...as well as several b-side Judas Priest gems. The crowd was hungry and thirsty for metal and Fortress gave it to them for a solid hour and a half.
What a way to kick off the movie premier season and get everyone hyped on the coming winter!!

Softball Rally
After the first couple of innings the Long Ballz had gotten their home runs for the game. For those who don't know the rules of co-ed softball your team is only allowed three home runs, any home run after that is an out. So that helped us out a bit, as they did get a few home runs after that. In the seventh inning we were down 16-0 but our team spirit was on fire and we rallied. By the end of the seventh inning we pulled out 8 runs to end the game 16-8. Nate put on his rally cap and it worked!

cupcake hell
Before I had my awesome job at Porters Sports I worked at Squaw Valley Ski Resort for eight years in a bakery. So needless to say I know how to bake, but I don't know how to keep my mouth shut especially when Kokanee beer is involved. My best friend told me she was getting married and of course I offered to make her cake and invitations, but that is another hell story, for the cake she decided she wanted to have cupcakes.
So the short of the deal is that I flew to Spokane, Wa and for 2 1/2 days I baked and decorated 240-260 cupcakes. I did have plenty of help but I think I had more "official cupcake testers" then real helpers. In the end we had no mishaps and the bride and groom were ecstatic about the cupcakes. I could say I never want to see cupcakes again but that wouldn't be true, as I love to bake! So thanks to all that helped me out; Mom, Andy, Kinsey, Frank, Riley, Lyndon, Doss, Aaron, Annamieke and of course Dad for being the supervisor of it all. Congrats Brittany and Joe!

Session Log Jam

The day, March 22nd. The place, Squaw Valley. The event, Sessions Log Jam. The winner, Chris Bosco. A beautiful sunny day set the stage for the third annual Sessions Log Jam. Three jumps and a variety of log jib options was the lay out. The competition was fierce with riders like Kyle (taceto) Earl, Zak Hale, Silas Stannard, Jonny Lazz, and Jonny Brady, but I was lucky enough to stomp my last run in the finals and come out on top. Fuel TV covered the event so be sure keep an eye out for the footage of the event and a little interview with me. Hope everyone is enjoying the great weather we have been having and see you on the hill.

Errol Kerr and Ski Cross: February 2008
Last week Thursday I had a ski cross clinic at Boreal. The weather was rather poor, but still about 9 of us battled the weather out there, and a lot of people were excited. So I hope to be able to do something similar in the spring time when the sun is shining.
I know a lot of people made it out to the Squaw Jeep King of the Mountain 48 Straight ski cross race, but if you didn’t, you guys all missed out on an awesome sunny day of some of the best racing that the sport has yet to see. The Ski Cross World Champion Tomas Krauss took home the win, followed by Casey Puckett (first for Americans), and I was able to squeeze out a win in the small final, and take home 5th place (and second for Americans). Fifth was not as good as I had hoped for that weekend. Coming home to my home mountain and my home town, I really wanted to put one in the Finals, and give everyone a good show. But it just didn’t work out.
I’m off to Europe in a couple days. In the meantime, I’ll be out trying to lay tracks where others can’t follow them because Errol Kerr doesn’t sleep. He waits!!

Jeep King of the Mountain Tour Day 3 Skiing Halfpipe

Sunscreen please! Skiers took on the stunt ditch today in honor of Tom Cruise. "Sorry Goose....it's time to bust the tower!" Yes, it's true, skiers DO go BIG in the Pipe. Simon Dumont made the trip but was ailing a separated shoulder. Porters Team rider Sean Field was in the mix and had a solid 1st run in qualys but was denied entrance into the final. Super lame, cause Sean was boosting and had a tech line! The Kiwi from down under was boosting as well, Jossi Wells, no pun intended. Can you say big and techy spinning both ways going Dumont large with style & control? Yeah, he ruled it all day in qualy's and the final taking the win.
Aside from the competition itself, I do have a complaint or can I say grievance to file. Organizers, please STOP LAGGING AND KILLING THE ENEGRY OF A CONTEST FOR TV! First off, this is not a live feed so there should be no major delays. Second, the field wasn't even that big 25 men total and 6 women I believe. I've seen local contests run faster for Pete's sake! There's nothing better than fans & the rest of the media standing around waiting for something to go down. I love it when I'm standing on the deck and an interested fan asks me "When does the competition start?"
I respond "Um it already did like 15 minutes ago."
They reply "Really??? Then what is going on ? I haven't seen anyone go yet."
"My point exactly!"
Yes, granted I know a few of the guys on the crew and I like them all. PLEASE get it together....
Delays like that just kill any kind of energy not just for the fans, but the participants as well. The X Games is a live feed and they ran quicker than this event. Some of the same crew was used here as well. I don't know, whatever. It's beautiful and sunny out...just rock it straight no BS.....you can fix your edit later in post.
After all my ranting, something did lift my spirits.....I looked over underneath the banners on the deck and there were a bunch of groms waiting for guys to hit the pipe. They all had big old smiles and were stoked to see the skiers going huge! Some of them may be in the ditch someday.
