Ponderosa Golf Course

Ponderosa Golf Course
This past Wednesday evening Momma C treated Chappy and myself to some twilight golf at the Ponderosa Golf course here in Truckee CA. Quick side note, Ponderosa was purchased last year by the Truckee Airport and is now maintained by the Truckee Parks and Rec. Twilight starts around 2 or 2:30 and costs $20, which is a great price for golf around here. The course was in great shape and you could even plug your ball on a few of the greens. Ponderosa offers easy fairways and decent sized greens. If your looking for an affordable golf course in Truckee swing on over.

Now, to the match at hand. We started off a bit slow trying to make sure Momma had the right equipment. For some reason Harley, her husband, had given her a ski glove in exchange for her old golf glove and telling her that the ski glove was a much better golf glove. UM? REALLY? so we fixed that issue and off we went. Momma's second shot off the first tee afforded us our next giggle. Momma reached down, with tee in hand and started to tee up her ball for her second shot. We quickly reviewed the rules and proceeded. Chappy spent most of the round shaking some rust off but give him a few more rounds and He should be firing some decent rounds.

Another quick note, 50/50 Brewing Co. is right next to the 9th fairway and with Chappy in tow that's where is attention span on golf started to wane. So as soon as we finished Chappy had already made up his mind and headed to our next stop of the evening. We here at Porters Love 50/50, ok so its a Brewing Co. and yes we like beer but they make the most killer Ahi BLT. If you are ever in Truckee go to 50/50 drink their beer (I personally love the Rockslide IPA) and eat an AHI BLT!!! Thank you Momma and Chappy for an entertaining Wednesday evening.

Coyote Moon Golf Course

Last Saturday the man behind Porter's "Premiere" motto Mr. Harley Chapman (Sr. VP) treated Johnathan Dejong (our hardgoods buyer Jason Dejong's younger brother)and a Mr. Shaydar Edleman MT Manager for Boreal Ski Resort and myself, to a friendly round of golf at Coyote Moon in good ole Truckee Ca. With all that said I can actually get down to what went down on the golf course. Harley is a man that loves friendly competition so he set-up a few guidelines for the round, first we played a two man scramble (best ball), second the teams were myself and John, Harley and Shaydar, third no strokes were given to favor any team (this ones important). First a little background about the golfers playing in the match, myself, I enjoy golf but I am not claiming any handicap, Johnathan is in about the same boat and still working to correct some swing issues and Harley rounds out the non handicappers and still has a great athletic approach to his game even though he may try and pull the senior card out from time to time. Now to Shaydar, he is an 8.2 handicapper and has done some caddying on the side and plays regularly throughout the summer when he is not busy putting up new lift towers. So as anyone can tell this was a fair fight from the get go.

On to the course itself, Coyote Moon is an amazing golf course. Nestled in a valley right before the massive Tahoe Donner starts, Coyote Moon offers a view to the surrounding Truckee area that many visitors many never see. Pro tips on the course even give you famous landmarks as targets to aim towards. Do not be fooled that this is a friendly course by any means, this is a shooters course that demands good shots from drive to chip, but golf is about fun and enjoyment right?

So off the first tee all seemed like it was going to be a great day of golf with good competition but after nine holes team hackers realized that we had no chance at handing Harley a defeat that he sorely needed. Jonathan and I worked hard to keep pace but Shaydar rarely makes mistakes and with him coaching Harley shot selections they were an unbeatable force, Harley even sunk a nasty 20 footer for birdie.

I really feel there is no need to venture any further into team Hackers sound defeat and rather I think we should really focus on our individual achievements. Johnathan had a few good pokes including a great 5 wood on hole 1. Harley, well Harley had some great shots as well but mentioning them might boost his ego too much and I need to make sure I have a fighting chance the next time we golf (I mean he made a sick 20ft put). And Shaydar, well lets speak of the one mistake he actually made when I was finally able to get into his head b/c other than one mistake he played flawless golf and if we kept score his front nine would have been close to a 38 (that’s nasty).

Play Coyote Moon it’s a little pricey but sometimes you need to treat yourself to the finer things in life.

Motorcyclist who ran from CHP still at large

By Jenny Goldsmith
Sierra Sun
,

California Highway Patrol officers are still investigating the identity of a motorcyclist involved in a high-speed pursuit Saturday night that resulted in Officer James Giraudo sustaining moderate injuries.

At approximately 10 p.m. Saturday, Giraudo began pursuing an unidentified motorcyclist traveling northbound on Highway 89 south, according to a CHP release.

While attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Squaw Valley Road in pursuit of the driver, Giraudo lost control of his patrol vehicle and struck a light pole. The vehicle rotated backwards and ended up in a ditch on the northwest corner of the intersection, according to the CHP.

Giraudo was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno where he remains in the intensive care unit for moderate injuries, said CHP Officer Steve Skeen.

Officers are following up on several leads to identify the motorcyclist, who’s vehicle was found abandoned on the golf course in Squaw Valley, Skeen said.

The motorcycle’s license plates were left on, and officers are investigating the registered owner and may fingerprint the vehicle to identify the unknown suspect, Skeen said.

The CHP has a policy to pursue a motorist purposefully without endangering the officer’s safety, said Jennifer Steel, a CHP officer and pursuit reporting coordinator.
Pursuits generally follow a vehicle code violation, stolen vehicle report or a warrant for arrest, Steel said.

The policy adds that a pursuit should be terminated when “the risks outweigh the benefits,” Steel said.

Officers should take into consideration traffic safety, pedestrians, bicyclists, school zones and heavily populated areas when considering a pursuit, she said.

Additionally, officers would no longer continue to pursue a vehicle once the driver is identified, Steel said.

The Truckee Police Department’s pursuit policy — which is similar to the CHP policy — became a public concern in 2004 when Chief Scott Berry was involved in the fatal chase of 20-year-old motorcyclist David Lee Kurrle in Glenshire.

The deadly chase spurred some Truckee residents to ask for a change in the pursuit policy, such as terminating high-speed chases in residential areas. However, the policy remains the same, said Truckee Police Sgt. Tim Hargrove.

Anyone with information about Saturday’s accident or the identity of the motorcyclist can call the CHP at 582-7570.

Local Love

Usually when you live in a small area like Truckee you meet and know almost everyone in town before you know it. The problem arises that once people live here for a few years they feel like they deserve a deal when patronizing local shops. Most small local stores will give a deal and really with as expensive as rent is these days a deal sometimes makes it so that store barely makes it. So the Bro deals sometimes is good for you but not for them. I never expect the deal since I want to see our local shops do well and when I get a little local love I need to make sure that store gets a little pat on the back for being a good local shop.

2 Weeks ago I left my car in our warehouse parking lot overnight trying to be a responsible driver. Upon my return in the morning my right rear tire was completely flat. So I took my car on over to Stones Country Tire just up the hill from work. They took my car in, checked out my tire and tried to fix the problem and did not charge me for the time. Fast forward to yesterday, I was about to leave work and I noticed the same tire flat once again. I was able to get my car up to Stones again and this time they were able to find the leak, one of my studs had pushed into the tire causing the slow leak. I was expecting some kind of charge for the repair and again they did not charge me. A big thanks goes out to Stones Tire, they give great service and have always been honest about prices for tires and other maintenance. Check em out when ever you need some tire love, but don't expect the bro deal rather thank them when they do help you out.

Questioning Intelligence...

With summer upon us I finally get the chance to watch the out of towners (gapers) try their luck at our now infamous round abouts. I guess growing up in the mid west seeing those good ole rounders out here didn't surprise me. The are a dime a dozen ranging in shape (they may be called round about but some of the round shapes are questionable) and size but all of them have a flow and a YIELD sign. Which raises the question, do Californians know how to drive? I heard the jokes about the traffic in CA but to watch people try and navigate our round abouts is freakin hilarious. No one seems to know when to yield and when not to. Or better yet just gun it and hope the person whose has the right away stops... Please learn the rules of the road before traveling to the lake this summer so traffic can keep flowing!
