Check out the new edition of Snowboarder Magazine for a full page shot of Brandon Cocard. Brandon gets his 1st full page shot on page 141! When we shot this rail...I honestly wasn't feeling it in photographic way, but you gotta just keep firing. Brandon kept delivering the goods & it was my job to capture that. He sure did get it done! If you'd like to get one of those sweet Porters Insane Shred tees he's rocking click and those oh so limited Ashbury goggles.

First day-
So the first day was kind of a logistical nightmare, trying to contact people at Hood is kind of hard because they are out shredding. We had some product that we brought with us to shoot so we decided to get on that and then deal with the rest of the planning in the afternoon.
If you have never been to Hood in the summer do it, it is an awesome time. So we set up shop in the parking lot at Timberline and got to work but not with out doing some awesome people watching. Check out the rims and the tire side lunch!
Once off the hill we were hooked up at Windells with passes to sk8 and shred the snow park. So the boys got their sk8 on and since I obviously forgot my deck and I am still hurting from playing “Bumper-car Queen” I watched from the sidelines. After shredding for a bit dinner was served and we jumped in line with the kiddies and waited for sweet hamburgers, tots and tofu. After dinner we went up to the Building out Back aka BOB for camper orientation, that was fun.
We then hooked up with Porters team rider and Windells Coach Brandon Cocard for an after dinner concrete quaterpipe session which Brandon destroyed! After some sweet shots we headed back to the Ark, where most of the Windells coaches live, and a few of the boys took some much needed showers, except for Rom who declared that he would not shower for the whole week! See you tomorrow.

Truckee to Hood!
I worked a bakery at Squaw for eight years so that means that I was at work by 5:30am. Just so you know it has been a few years since that job so waking up early on Tuesday didn’t go so smooth. A. I forgot my skateboard, B. I forgot my iPod and the bad oooops is that I forgot my atlas.
We, Eric our photo guy and team manager, his assistant and Omatic rider Zak Shelhamer, Line tech rep Rom Marrcucci, my buddy Dave and myself, all met at the Porters warehouse at 6am, really early for a few of our travelers, loaded up the RV to head to Mt. Hood. Once I got there I realized all the stuff I forgot, so I jumped on Google to find the map to Hood, hit print and we were off. We headed out on 395 to Susanville and once there we were to take a right towards Alturas but we missed the turn and ended up heading out to Lassen National Park. So we ended up on a little detour, a four-hour detour. POO! Being that there were some photo bugs on board we pulled over in Lassen to take some shots of its most beautiful landscape. Once out of Lassen we headed towards our original highway 299 but soon realized that we were in need of gas and food. We soon came to Fall River Mills Ca and stopped at a gas station that not only sold gas but they also sold bullets, booze and liquor. This little mart also had a little burrito shop inside and I m glad to say that none of us got rot-gut so I do recommend stopping at the Sportsman Liquor.
So remember how I said that 6am was early for some of our travelers, well Rom and Zack pretty much slept the entire way to Hood all while Eric pulled a huge shift behind the wheel. We finally pulled into Hood and Eric and I, as I was co-pilot , we were beat and went to bed to get an early start on the next day!

Surf's up! Road Trip to for Surf.

This last friday, I ventured down the hill with Porters team riders Andy Finch, Zak Shelhamer & good buddy Mike Basich in search for some summer swell. Finch & I got the email warning from Surfline.com that a small pulse of SW mixed with NW swell was on it's way to California. Finch has been in the water recently since he just competed in the Ultimate Boarder contest and his summer surf vibe was in full swing. I had no objections to the trip as I had confirmed the swell report with our buddies down at NHS (Santa Cruz). It's amazing that you can get 4 friends together for a trip like this with everyones busy schedules, even just for a couple of days.
We were stoked it was going to work out. Zak, Andy and I packed up here in Truckee and drove down to Colfax to pick up Mike Basich at his home/studio/junkyard. Mike has a ton of great stuff at his place and it's amazing to see what the guy can create with his hands. He runs to the beat off his own drum and it shows. He showed us this solar powered piston combustion engine that he plans to recreate in a much larger scale. I can't wait to see what he comes up with because it definitely looks like alternate energy sources are going to be the wave of the future. If you haven't noticed....I'm pretty sure you have, GAS PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS!
Our 1st goal & destination was to try to hit some evening surf in the Halfmoon Bay area. The foggy cool coastline was a ecstatic welcome from the scorching heat & heinous traffic we drove through in the Sacramento area. We were all anxious to get into the water, but 1st things 1st..... No surf trip in my book is ever complete without a stop at a burrito joint. We stopped at the Happy Taco for some Carne Asada and figured it would set us up with some "extra boost" power for the paddle. It was a great idea at first, but when we all finally hit the water....let's say we were a little slow if you will. The paddle was relatively easy but the shore break sure was punchy! Finch pulled into a handful of good waves right off the bat as Zak, Mike & myself struggled just to get to our feet. Mike was suffering from signs of hypothermia as his wetsuit was old and not rated for the water temps we we in. In this zone it's a mandatory 4mm/3mm wetsuit that you need. He called it and I soon followed as the burrito had done me in and I got "tacoed" in the shore break twice. Zak & Andy followed later sharing a wave in. It was time to setup camp because we had limited light left and the Halfmoon Bay cops told us they were closing the the gate to the beach. We bailed just outside the gate an we waited for the cop to close the gate. Once the cop bailed, we got our camping gear ready and Zak, Mike & I rolled beach down the beach while Finch went to go park the ride at an undisclosed location. Yes, we camped illegally and it's another way to keep things on the cheap.
We got down to our site and were ready for a campfire & smores. Well we were ready for a campfire, but you kinda need matches or some sort of fire to start a fire. Finch blew it! Matches were in another pack he left back up at the ride......oh well. We called it a night and planned on an early wake up to beat the Rangers on the beach. We pulled it off....no problemo.
We headed south toward Santa Cruz to check out some of the more known northern coves. Score! No wind, glassy, & 2-4ft swells were coming in! Basich sat this session out as he was still cold from the evening session the day before. Zak, Andy & I all scored fun waves and had a blast! I even broke-in my new board in on a sweet right. There were a lot of heads out but we picked a zone that we had to ourselves and there were plenty of peaks to be had. Good session!
This was the last day of our quick trip so we had to try to get to another zone cause Mikey hadn't pulled into one yet. We rolled back up north to Pacifica and visited the surfing capital of the Bay area. Talk about a junkshow! (See photos). We decided to stop at Rockaway beach and I let Mikey use my 6'8" Superfish. He instantly pulled into a couple and the smile & stoke was on. We all finally got some! Mission accomplished! It was time to call it a trip and head back up the hill as I had a Father's Day Skate Session planned back up at the Truckee park. If you can, get out on your own little adventure. Share the gas burden & plan accordingly....most importanly, enjoy the ride!

I have got to tell a little story about this one. So Brandon sets up this shoot for this wooden rail in Incline Village last night. He's been talking to me about it for a while and so we finally made time last night to do it. We get there and this sucker is buried and it's about 6:30pm. I'm thinking, this is going to be bitch. Brandon says, "Fuck it! Let's dig this bitch!" I'll admit I was a little reluctant cause I was hoping to be home at 8pm due to my fatherly duties. Brandon gets his shovel and starts going to town like a mad man throwing down the snow to the landing area as I stomp it out making the chunks nice. We trade off shoveling a few times as his asthma starts to bug him. We finally get the sucker dug and the rest of his film crew boys from welocometocolortv.com show up in late fashion. Brandon starts working on the takeoff as the video dudes Chase & Rob get all their lights & generator setup. We're almost ready and Brandon starts cursing the takeoff as it's way to soft & chalky. He takes water & tries to get the sucker to harden & finally it does. Next he goes for a slip run and on the way in his binding buckle starts to break. FUCK! Keep in mind it is now about 9:30 pm and nothing has gone the way we planned so far. I've gotten the call from the wife saying dinners been ready & she's pissed. The generator for the lights has crapped out on gas but luckily they had more. Brandon gets his binding to work & he's dropping this cause we just put a shit load of time to get it ready.
Attempt 1: 50-50 over shoot but his binding holds.
Attempt 2: He's goes for gap to front board, catches his back edge and goes down hard! He knocks the wind out of himself and his head hit the landing like a watermelon being crushed by a hammer!
I go check him out and he's curled over trying to get his breath back & holding his head. He's down for like 5-10 minutes and I tell video to cut the generator...Brandon says "NO! I'm gonna hit it again!"
We all look at each other like OK r u sure.....he goes up
Attempt 3: Gap to Frontboard makes it but a little sketch in the landing......his binding is still holding up but pretty loose.
Attempt 4: Gap to Front Board & Stomp! Need I say more
Attempt 5: Gap to Five-O & Stomp.....he wants more
Does it like 2 more times to be a champ & calls it
Time: 10:30 or 11 we don't get home till almost midnight I think
We break it down and call it a night. Point: Brandon is the MAN! It didn't look like it was going to happen but it did.
Talked to him this morning & he's pretty beat up...his neck is a little whiplash, back is jacked up, & he's getting sick.
But.....we got the shot!

Hey there all...sorry for the late post. The Stunt ditch action went down yesterday in grand fashion. The Pipe was perfect & the sun was out. It was a little nippy, but everyone seemed to manage. The Pipe is always a great way to cap off a weekend of competition. As expected the guys and gals were boosting and having a grand ole time in a perfectly cut Frank Wells Pipe. Yes, Andy Finch Was boosting along with Danny Kass, Steve Fisher, Mason Aguirre & many more. For the Gals, no one could touch Elena Height..no pun intended but she was going higher, smoother, & techier than the rest of the girls with a backside 9! She won of course and this is 2 years in a row for Elena. Local Gal Ally Carrol made her way into the finals and I was stoked to see her step it up and compete against the big names.
In the mens side of the comp it was definitely a hard call. Kass just busted out of nowhere and put down a 1st run that no one could match. Finch was going richter once again busting the towers & earning highest air honors. Andy also saved himself from death and did a switch layed out backflip which was supposed to be a cab 10 but got stuck on the take off. He had everyone holding their breath as he lay upside down with about 15 ft in the air almost dead sailor, but managed to get it back around and land! Gnarly! Louie Vitto was spinning like a top. Iouri Podlatchikov (Ipod) almost had an identical run to Louie's but went a little bigger. Mason Aguirre has the syliest backside 5 1st hit and frontside nine melon poke I've ever seen. Elijah Teeter is Bob Burnquist on a snowboard, backside 7 1st hit to switch method like no ones business. Tommy Cheszchin, ws machine like as always making everything look like it was produced out of a factory. Everyone had a strong showing and it was definitely a great time! I can't wait for next year.

Vans Tahoe Cup 2008 Back In Town

Yes, it's that time of year again where Northstar at Tahoe gets taken over by a bunch of punk snowboarders! The Vans Tahoe Cup is back and it looks like it's going to be another great year of snowboard sessions. Staying true to the spirit of snowboarding, all events will be freestyle; halfpipe, slopestyle and the rail jam. Competition got started off today with a qualifier for up-and-comers to mix it up with the big boys. Team Porters riders Bobby Witty & Brandon Cocard hit up the course and gave it their all to have a chance at the big money. Vans was going to take the top six qualifiers out of the field. Silas Stannard, Zak Shelhamer & Andy Finch all already have spots in the prelims for slopestyle. Andy is also
in the halfpipe and Silas will be in the rail jam tomorrow night.
Bobby & Brandon both had strong showings in qualys but only Brandon got it. I feel Bobby was robbed of a spot as he had big spins and didn't fall during his runs. The judging will always be in question but I think this one was a major f*&$ up! He should be in....hopefully if some invited riders don' t show they'll give him a spot.
After the qualys, Brandon and I went over to the big jump they had setup on Moonshine a snapped a few pics. Silas hung out and played cheerleader and gave me some company while Brandond hit the jump. Silas was saving himself for tomorrow night and the rest of the weekend. It should be a doozy so come on out and enjoy the Vans Cup.

Jeep King of the Mountain Tour Day 2 SkierCross

What a full day of racing today. Can you say warm and sunny? Well, it was just that and the racing on the course was hot as well. The competition was stacked with US heavyweights and competitors from abroad. Of course I was routing for our local boys Errol Kerr and Daron Rahlves, but the field was stacked. Thomas Kraus, Casey Puckett, Stanley Hayer & Jake Fiala.
With this short course you'd better be 1st or 2nd out of that gate and hold your line or else it was all over. There was not much in terms of lead changes going down so every one was gunning for the holeshot.
In the mens competition, Tomas Kraus was fast all day and made his presence felt as he took the field. Errol Kerr took the consolation final and was an exception to the rule of getting the holeshot coming from behind to win. Daron unexpectedly went out in the quarters, but be sure to see him ste it back up in Sun Valley.
Sorry for the short post but I'm beat. I've got 2 more days of shooting & posting to do. Also, my son is screaming for some daddy time. Come on out and join us on the hill for the next 2 days for skiing & snowboarding halfpipe.

Jeep King of the Mountain Tour Day 1

Once again, it's been beautiful and sunny out here in Lake Tahoe. Today was the 1st day of competition for the Jeep King of the Mountain Tour here at Squaw Valley USA. Todays event was mens and womens boardercross racing. The course wasn't the longest, but fast and sweet. If you had the holeshot, you were pretty sure to keep it if you held off the other competitors and held your own.
PortersTahoe.com athlete Nate Holland was on course as well still enjoying the high from his 3-peat XGames Gold. Competition was stiff today though, as Shaun Palmer who was very disappointed with his X Games appearance looked for revenge. Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott and the burly Nick Baumgartner were on hand as well adding excitement to the racing. Former Olympic halfpipe Gold Medalist Ross Powers was also in attendance trying to rejuvenate his boardercross roots.
in the end Shaun Palmer took all the marbles and I don't think he was ever behind anyone on the course. Nate Holland came from last place all the way into 2nd in the finals. If the course were a bit longer he may have caught up to Palm. Nick Baumgartner & Nate did make some contact throughout the course and I think a protest was filed. But as the saying goes, rubbin is racing. In the womens final, Lindsey Jacobellis does it again. Joanie Anderson was pressing her hard, but couldn't catch her.
Tomorrow is the mens Skiercross event and it should be another beauty as the weather forecast is looking great for the entire weekend. Errol Kerr & Darren Rahlves will be out there representing Truckee once again. Come out and join the fun and all the concert event that will be going on in the Village after the competitions.
