When and where did you start skiing?
I started skiing when I was six years old. My mom used to take my brother and I to ski areas in CT. She was a teacher at the time, and she'd correct papers while we were out power-wedging the hell out of Connecticut groomers.
When did the skiing bug really bite you?
I raced for my high school my junior and senior years. I got pretty into it. Then I went to Saint Michael's College in Vermont. I ended up scheduling my classes around skiing, and Stowe was the ultimate east coast ski area to really suck you in. Stowe's got everything from groomers, bumps, park, and crazy east coast off-piste skiing that most people wouldn't even understand.
How did you end up in Tahoe?
After I graduated from college I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with myself. We'd just finished the most epic winter in about 50 years on the east coast and I figured it would never happen again. I had some friends who were headed this way, so I just tagged along for a winter, or eight.
How did you become affiliated with Porter's, the best ski shops in the whole wide world?
My friend Alex started to manage the Tahoe City store about 6 years ago. At the time I was a ski technician, so I jumped on board and spent 2 seasons in the backshop at the Tahoe City store. Working for Porter's was great so I kept my relationship going with them, and now they take care of me in a different way. Mostly happy endings.
You don't really ski at Squaw, what's the deal with that?
I ski Squaw a couple days a season. It's just not my place. I prefer not to ski around crowds, lift lines, tracked out pow, and car sized bumps. I choose to ski at Alpine Meadows. I'm more comfortable there. I like fresh, smooth snow, which is also why I spend more than half my ski days in the backcountry. There are hundreds of places to go skiing around here, and fortunately not that many people are brave enough to get out and explore.
You're a "pro" skier, what's your secret?
Well, I'd rather not give away my secrets , but if you must know... Never let them see you ski. No one sees me ski, that's it. I don't let it happen.
What do you love most about skiing?
The feeling that it gives you. Floating down the side of a mountain on a cushion of air is a very unique experience, strangely addicting and life altering.
We heard there is a new Porter's ski team manager, who is it?
His name is Rom. I don't really know how he got the gig. I've seen him ski once though. It was one of the rare days that I was man enough to ski at Squaw, and he was ripping it. I'm thinking he needs the upgrade, maybe he could be on the team, like a player/coach, you know...
