Summer Avalanche
8/24/08 9:30 am
Reports from the Mont Blanc region this morning are of an avalanche on Mont Blanc du Tacul outside Grenoble, France. 10 missing and 8 hospitalized. The slide was started by an icefall at 11800'. Just a reminder that avalanches are not only reserved for winter, but they can occur at any point during the year. Icefall on snow is a perfect example of a trigger for a summertime release.
No chance of a slide in Tahoe for the foreseeable future. Although we do have weather coming as an unseasonably cold and strong low pressure system is developing in the Gulf of Alaska. We won't see any precip from this system, just wind, which has raised fire weather concerns throughout the Northern Sierra. Breezy conditions in town and windy conditions along the ridges tomorrow with the passage of the cold front which will also drop temps back to climatology.

Looking into Labor Day weekend, high pressure centered over 4corners region will spread upper level moisture to the Eastern Sierra, possibly as far North as Tahoe. Possible thunderstorms for the Mammoth area, for Tahoe right now, warm temps, afternoon zephyrs and the chance of thunderstorms (minimal @ this time)
