Light snowfall for Tahoe

11/24/08 7:50 am
Long anticipated pattern change gets underway today. Good to see the pattern change, but I am not holding out for any significant amounts of snow from the two low pressure systems that will affect the area this week. Current model forecasts bring the first low onshore in Southern California after brushing down the Northern Sierra. Timing for the first round of snow/ rain will be Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Snowfall accumulations will increase as you head South of Tahoe, with 8-12" for Mammoth Mountain, and higher amounts as you head into the High Sierra South of Mammoth (a few feet). For Tahoe, a few inches along the crest.

The second system to affect the area will be Friday/ Saturday which is a change from the previous forecast. So instead of Thursday night and possibly lingering into the weekend, the storm track now looks to be overland, tracking into Northern Nevada and along the Eastern Sierra, starving the low of abundant Pacific moisture, and also speeding up the exit to the East. Again, at this point only a few inches of snow for Tahoe. Snow levels for the period look to be around 6000', lowering Friday night to 5500-5000'. HPC 5day H2O forecast is actually lower today since yesterday, looking to 1/2" for Tahoe through Saturday. In reality, that only hints to ~6" snow through the week. Hope that changes and gets wetter. After Saturday, growing confidence in a Rex Block pattern developing which is not good for snow lovers.

5-14 Day Outlook:
Beyond Thanksgiving weekend, two possible scenarios that have been illustrated in the models these last few days are 1) a Rex Block pattern which is not good for snow lovers or 2) a blocking high pressure ridge in the Gulf of AK with a breakthrough of the Westerlies into CA, which is excellent for snow lovers. Hopefully it's the latter. Also December could start off as a cold one for almost all of the USA. Much below normal temps are forecast from our Canadian side to our Mexican side and everything in between.
