More storms- maybe snow?

6/1/09 8:55am
Uncharacteristically long thunderstorm pattern to continue across the Sierra and Western NV as an upper low continues to spin off the CA coast. This upper low is slowly drifting East and will enhance our thunderstorm possibilities today and again on Wednesday. Not leaving Tuesday out of the mix, but conditions are more favorable today and especially Wednesday. This upper low will continue to rotate shortwaves into the Sierra and the NorCal highcountry through the rest of the week. Due to a Westerly shift in winds, storms today and for the next few days will have a N-NE track, instead of the W-NW track they have had for much of the last week.

Today there is a great chance for good coverage of t-storms and the possibility of small hail and strong outflow winds from some cells. For Wed- conditions are progged to be ripe for possible severe t-storm development as the jet stream noses into the Sierra producing strong forcing and diffluence aloft.

By Friday/ Sat the upper low finally tracks East across the Sierra but not before bringing cooler temps and the possibility of showers and snow above 9000' Friday night.

Temps today will be in the upper 60s in Truckee and upper 50s at 8k. Through this week temps drop a few degrees each day so by Friday temps in Truckee will be in the upper 50s, and 40s @ 8k.

So an active pattern for sure this week. Mountain biking is great all around Tahoe right now, with only the trails on N-NE aspects above 7500' still having snow cover. The rest of it is ripping. Watch out for lightning if you are out in the afternoons this week. With more rain coming, it will only get better.
