Snowy Week
11/17/09 7:12am
Winter Weather Advisory for the Western Slope of Northern Sierra Nevada
Snowy week on tap for Tahoe as two storms and some lingering showers will give us the winter feel we have been looking for. Currently a vigorous storm is lashing the PacNW and we will see a piece of that energy split off and drop down the coast. This will give us tonight's snow. Accumulations will be light due to the splitting nature and the shearing apart of that energy as it slides down the Sierra. The bulk of the precip will stay North of Tahoe, giving Lassen and Shasta a good shot of snow.
For us, the associated cold front will pass through this evening/ over night and the TSC should see 4"+/- (maybe 6") and in town/ lake level a few inches at best. The band of precip is pretty narrow and will be quick moving. H2O forecast for the next 24hrs shows .12" for Truckee @ 6200', .05" for Mt Rose @ 7200' and .3" at Blue Canyon @ 5200'. Snow levels will be 5k & lower so we should see all snow out of this one.
Winds have already turned to the SW, hence the warmer temps this morning and especially this afternoon. Highs today near 50F in Truckee and 40s @8k. Cold front swings through bringing SW winds 15-25 G35 and ridge winds to 80mph overnight. Temps tomorrow will be low 40s in Truckee and low 30s @8k. Snow showers will last into the day along the crest with some accumulation.
The bigger story will be the end of the week storm which has the potential to be the season starter. Models over the last day have shown the timing being later on Friday/ Friday night rather than Thursday night. Where the jet stream sets up remains to be the big question. Placement means 1-1.5" H2O, or 2"+ H2O. More likely than not, we will see 1.5-1.75" H2O along the TSC, and with temps staying in the 20s, we could see snow to water ratios 15:1 or even 20:1. So questions still abound. Still sitting with my projection that by Saturday we could see a weekly storm total of around 2', maybe more. Snow showers should last through Saturday and even into Sunday along the crest. More to come to fine tune this.
