6 more weeks, bring it, and bring it strong

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

2/3/10 9:34pm
Active pattern setting up for Tahoe. Current forecast looking good for snow to develop Thursday night-> Friday and again on Saturday. I am going to wait until tomorrow night to get into the details because the forecast is still evolving. First call is about 2'+/- along the TSC as the H2O forecast is tallying to 2.5"+ for the 5day. Snow levels will rise to about 6k on Friday, so snow-2-water ratios will be low, but by Saturday snow levels will drop below 5k bringing the blower. Get the boards waxed because this will be the last decent snow event until mid month. Unfortunately next week isn't going to pan out the way I have been talking, and the way that the models were showing 7days ago. By next week there will be a blocking pattern over the PacNW, which will mean either no snow for us, or a colder, showery pattern with no major accumulations. More on that later. So check back tomorrow as the forecast will be fine tuned and I will have the skinny on this weekend's snow.

Of note, there were three significant avalanches on the East Side in the last week. A large, natural slide outside Big Pine which ran about 3000' and a snowboarder triggered slide in the area of the Four Gables which took him for a good ride. Great to hear that the snowboarder is alive and well. Also, an inbounds avy grabbed a ski patroller at Mammoth recently which resulted in injuries. Just goes to prove that the East Side is a much different beast than Tahoe and correlations on snow conditions and snowpack stability are not a given. Be mindful of this. Avy forecast links are below for Tahoe and the East Side.

More tomorrow.
