More dust for your crust
Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information
2/20/10 6:23pm
Today paints another picture as to what the weather will do. In a nutshell, the GFS is not as bullish about this up coming week's precip chances compared to yesterday, the H2O forecast for the next three days is down but the bright spot is the CPC 6-10 & 8-14 day outlooks show below average temps and above average precip for the Tahoe Sierra. The CPC also shows heavy rain and snow for CA on 2/22&23. Good to see the potential, although there is still uncertainty as to what next week will bring. I don't think we will see realization of my 18-24" call from last post by Tuesday. 1'+/- is more reasonable when factoring the latest guidance. When we get a better picture of Tuesday's/Wednesday's storm, then we might total 18-24" from today as H2O totals will near 2".
Tonight will feature snow showers dropping down from the North as low pressure moves closer to the Central/ Southern CA coastline. Winds are currently SW gusting 30-40mph+ along the ridges. Temps have stayed in the 20s @ 8k, so the snowpack is well frozen at this point after such a warm week. We might see a burst of moderate snow tonight, but the coverage will be isolated. Some portions of North Lake Tahoe will see 4" while others might see 8". Snow showers have been more common along the SW side of Tahoe today, and is currently showing the most returns.
Tonight winds will gust to 50mph from the SW, switching NW and eventually E by early Monday. Expect wind speeds to diminish as Sunday turns to Monday. Highs will be in the 30s in Truckee, 20s @ 8k for the next few days. As it stands right now, snow showers are possible along the TSC each day all week due to favorable orographic flow into the Sierra . A warm up will occur mid week before the possibility of a more powerful storm late next week. Stay tuned, this will be an interesting and active week.
