Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

Next storm on tap for late Thursday night through Saturday morning. Forecast right now has a Winter Storm Warning for the Western Slope of the Northern Sierra and a Winter Weather Advisory for Tahoe. Typical Sierra storm, starting off strong, wet and warm and ending with low snow levels and a nice topper. Expect rain to 6500' for a time Friday before the cold front drops it like it's hot. 1'-1.5' expected along the TSC. 3-6" Tahoe City/ Truckee way. SW winds will be heavy Friday with ridge winds will hit 100mph easy. Heaviest snow times out to be overnight Friday-Saturday. H2O forecast tallies close to 1.5" along the Western Crest of the Tahoe Basin. So the forecast from yesterday still looks good, but there is one thing to add. By Saturday the wind direction will switch N and eventually NE-E. By the time this happens the strong winds will subside, but a wind scouring event will happen on N-NE-E aspects along the crest. There is also a chance that this system will be quick enough to shift East which will make Saturday a possible blue-bird pow day. I think it is safer to say that the sun will be out along the crest by afternoon. Kinda sucks seeing how this is going to be the last shot of decent snow for at least a week. Possibly longer.
Starting Sunday skies will be clear and a warm ridge city sets up. Really warm ridge city. 60F in Truckee Tuesday? Yep. Spring arrives Sunday. Just with the time change. Remember to set your clocks ahead Saturday night. Riding on Sunday comes around an hour earlier.
By Tuesday a full on corn cycle should develop on South facing aspects. Due to the high pressure overhead temps might not drop below freezing Wed/Thurs @ elevation. Be mindful of the first big warm up and how the snowpack will react. There will be an avalanche cycle Friday night/ Saturday morning as this heavy new snow will sit on the dry, powdery snow from Tuesday night (on N->E aspects where the cold snow lasted these last two days). As it gets warmer on Tuesday/ Wednesday wet slab avalanches are possible due to intense solar radiation. Get out early to avoid the risk. Afternoon's will be sunny and warm. Great for beer drinkin.
The last few days of March could bring one last breakthrough of the Westerlies. This is good news for snow lovers.
