Mid Week Delight
Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information
3/3/10 7:42am
Winter Storm Warning issued for the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada for today and a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Tahoe Basin. H2O forecast for the next 24hrs is ~1.7" for the West side of the crest. Temps are in the teens @ 8k with S-SW winds 40-50mph gusting 65+mph. Expect winds to increase to near 80mph as the cold front passes today. Very cold system will create favorable snow to water ratios of 12:1 and better, so 1.5' of fresh, blower pow along the crest is reasonable. Elevations above 9000' could easily see 2'. At lake level, 3-6" is expected. Snow should taper to showers late tonight.
Thursday will be a great day of skiing so get out and enjoy.
The weekend is not looking as stormy as previously forecast. What was once to be a big storm, might actually turn out to be nothing more than snow showers. Current consensus is that the GulfAK low will cut off and slowly meander down the CA Coast, finally pushing onshore in SoCal. The track of the low is uncertain at this time, which is causing the problems in locking in snowfall amounts. Right now the track looks to be off shore far enough to give coastal CA rain while leaving the Sierra out of the juice. Yes, the Sierra Stiff Arm. Then, we could also see a period of moderate snow Saturday. More to come as we get closer.
