It just keeps going and going....
Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information
4/29/10 8:30am
Winter in April continues as the upper elevations along the Tahoe Sierra Crest have seen ~29" of new snow in the last three days. The base of Squaw has picked up 16" in the same time period. Late April powder days are always nice. Skiing and riding is excellent right now so make sure to get a few last turns before all the bull wheels stop turning.
For Thursday and Friday, temps will be below normal as N-NE flow prevails with a slight chance of more snow showers. For Saturday and Sunday skies should start to clear with temps getting into the 50s in Truckee, upper 40s @8k.

What season is it?
Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information
4/25/10 8:54pm
Another week and another snow storm. Mother Nature can't seem to pick spring or winter for Tahoe, so we are just going to have to keep skiing/ riding. Ample snowpack still exists above 6500' around the Tahoe Sierra. Skiing is spring primo right now, and as you head South along the Sierra, winter conditions still exist above 10,000'. Down South in the High Sierra, Northern facing elevations above 10,000' are still serving winter pow and a variety of other surface conditions exist elsewhere.
Very active week on tap as another in this endless spring series of cold GulfAK lows makes its way into the PacNW and the Sierra. A little difference this week, a mix of the Maui Zaui. That will keep snow levels rather high as abundant subtropical moisture makes its way onshore. Deep low pressure, coupled with a strong jet stream and lots-o-moisture will slam into the Sierra on Tuesday. Winds will increase on Monday night and peak midday Tuesday during the cold front passage. Expect ridge winds gusting in excess of 100mph by Tuesday morning, 30mph in town. Ahead of the front will be the bulk of the moisture, 1-2" H2O forecast for the TSC with snow levels starting 8000'+ and staying 7000'+ through late Tuesday/ until after FROPA. Behind the front, snowlevels will drop to 5500' on the East Side, 4000"- on the West Side of the Tahoe Sierra. A winter storm warning has been issued by NWS Sacto for the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada. There appears to be another shot of cold air/ precip for Thursday keeping temps below normal, precip around and breezy conditions through Saturday. Overall snowfall accumulations by Thursday could be 1-2' along the TSC above 7500'. Below 7000' precip will be mostly in the form of rain, with light snow accumulations late Tuesday night-> Wednesday morn. From Tuesday->Thursday the bulk of the precip will hit the Northern Sierra, with amounts dropping quickly East and South of Tahoe.
Weather should calm down late this week into the weekend. There is the possibility for another round of cooler, unsettled weather the first week of May. Spring will come, maybe by summer......

Nice weekend, snow on tap
Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information
4/18/10 8:55pm
Super nice weekend with sunny skies, warm temps and great snow. Fantastic.
That's all going to change as another later season winter storm is poised to bring another shot of winter our way. The battle of spring v. winter continues.
By Monday night windy conditions will have once again developed over the region as a large area of low pressure in the GulfAK begins to send moisture and dynamics onshore. Winds and precipitation peak on Tuesday during the cold front passage. Much colder temps will linger Wednesday and Thursday. Expect a solid 25F drop in high temps between today and Wednesday. So for Tuesday expect much colder conditions, strong winds and rain/snow switching to all snow. High temps Tues/Wed will be in the 30s to near 40 for Truckee.
As of tonight, Sunday, a winter storm watch has been issued for the Western Slope of the Northern Sierra by NWS Sacto for Tuesday. Snow fall totals (by Wednesday evening) will range from 12"+ around Tahoe to 12-24" above 8000' in the Mammoth area. Snow levels will start out rather high, 6500'+, but will fall below lake level by Tuesday afternoon. There does seems to be post frontal moisture, so light amounts of accumulating snows will fall throughout the Tahoe Basin at lake level.
Warm up looks to hold off until Friday and into the weekend. Next week holds the possibility of still another round of winter weather. Stay tuned.
