Taking a break from winter. Is there a return flight?

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

3/14/10 9:44pm

Fantastic weekend. Just fantastic. Fresh snow. Cold temps. Great mid winter conditions. A+. Lots of stoke going around. Tahoe is at it's finest right now. Filled in with premium surface conditions.

Things change only a little tomorrow. The sun will be in full force, the N-E wind will calm and the temps will climb. Expect highs to get into the 50s @ the lake, near 60F in Truckee through Wednesday. 40s will be common even in the highest elevations. Clouds and winds will start to increase late Tuesday as we run the chance of getting brushed by an inside slider Wednesday/ night. Chances of precip are minimal. One highlight will also be the mid-slope inversions that will develop starting tonight. Expect night time low temps to stay a bit above freezing between 6500-7500 +/- Monday night->Wednesday night as the high pressure peaks overhead.

The weather is going to be pretty mellow over the next week. This pattern is very likely going to last into next weekend. Other than the clouds and a slight chance of light showers Wednesday, it looks like the sun will be doing its thing. Forecasts in the time frame outside 5-7days are really a crap shoot seeing how we are fully in the transitionary season. Models seem to struggle with consistency this time of year. The forecast can change rapidly only one day out. So stay tuned.

There is talk of the storm door opening again during the last few days of March. There is a very good probability (at this point looking forward) we will get one last taste of winter before the snow is lost to the boaters and swimmers.

Dump Alert

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

3/11/10 6:48pm

Next storm on tap for late Thursday night through Saturday morning. Forecast right now has a Winter Storm Warning for the Western Slope of the Northern Sierra and a Winter Weather Advisory for Tahoe. Typical Sierra storm, starting off strong, wet and warm and ending with low snow levels and a nice topper. Expect rain to 6500' for a time Friday before the cold front drops it like it's hot. 1'-1.5' expected along the TSC. 3-6" Tahoe City/ Truckee way. SW winds will be heavy Friday with ridge winds will hit 100mph easy. Heaviest snow times out to be overnight Friday-Saturday. H2O forecast tallies close to 1.5" along the Western Crest of the Tahoe Basin. So the forecast from yesterday still looks good, but there is one thing to add. By Saturday the wind direction will switch N and eventually NE-E. By the time this happens the strong winds will subside, but a wind scouring event will happen on N-NE-E aspects along the crest. There is also a chance that this system will be quick enough to shift East which will make Saturday a possible blue-bird pow day. I think it is safer to say that the sun will be out along the crest by afternoon. Kinda sucks seeing how this is going to be the last shot of decent snow for at least a week. Possibly longer.

Starting Sunday skies will be clear and a warm ridge city sets up. Really warm ridge city. 60F in Truckee Tuesday? Yep. Spring arrives Sunday. Just with the time change. Remember to set your clocks ahead Saturday night. Riding on Sunday comes around an hour earlier.

By Tuesday a full on corn cycle should develop on South facing aspects. Due to the high pressure overhead temps might not drop below freezing Wed/Thurs @ elevation. Be mindful of the first big warm up and how the snowpack will react. There will be an avalanche cycle Friday night/ Saturday morning as this heavy new snow will sit on the dry, powdery snow from Tuesday night (on N->E aspects where the cold snow lasted these last two days). As it gets warmer on Tuesday/ Wednesday wet slab avalanches are possible due to intense solar radiation. Get out early to avoid the risk. Afternoon's will be sunny and warm. Great for beer drinkin.

The last few days of March could bring one last breakthrough of the Westerlies. This is good news for snow lovers.

Winter continues, spring break next week

Lake Tahoe Area Weather and Snowpack Information

3/10/10 8:35pm

The good word is that snow quality was A+ today. Tomorrow the snow will change a bit as warm temps and increasing humidities manktify the lower elevations. Overall Thursday will be a great day to ski/ride nonetheless. If you can get out, do so. It will be sweet.

Next storm on tap for late Thursday night through Saturday morning. Forecast right now has a winter storm watch for the Western Slope of the Northern Sierra and snow advisories (maybe the WSW?) for Tahoe? Typical Sierra storm, starting off strong, wet and warm and ending with low snow levels and a nice topper. Expect rain to 6500' for a time Friday before the cold front drops it like it's hot. 1'+ possible along the TSC. 3-6" Tahoe City/ Truckee way. SW winds will be heavy Thursday night into Friday with ridge winds 100mph easy. Heaviest snow times out (right now) to overnight Friday-Saturday. H2O forecast tallies close to 1.5" along the Western Crest of the Tahoe Basin. More to come tomorrow as we get one last storm and then ridge city. Warm ridge city. Really warm ridge city. 60F in Truckee Tuesday? Say it ain't so.

Temps Thursday will top out in the 40s in Truckee, upper 30s @ 8k. Temps start to jump Sunday.
