It's On!

6/24/09 11:30am
After a long period of below normal temps and rain, Tahoe is once again at full glory with daytime temps in the 80's in Truckee, 70's @ the lake and 60's along the ridges. Still some snow out there to make a few turns on, the mountain biking is sick and the wildflowers are just starting what will be a magnificent bloom. It is a perfect time to be in Tahoe, of course that's all the time.

Low pressure currently off the CA coast will push East Thursday/ Friday bringing the chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. High pressure will rebuild for the weekend before more troughiness resumes early next week. Longer range through July 4, shows the possibility of the occasional trough passage and a cut off low off the coast which increases the chances for thunderstorms. It is summer in full swing. Enjoy!

I myself will be visiting the very wet, cool and soon to be hot and humid NorthEast. Next post will be July 8th or sometime around there.

Where's Summer?

6/18/09 11am
No Pedro didn't off her.....but it sure does seem cool this June. In fact Reno now has the third wettest June ever, in which they are just 0.01" away from tying the number two wettest June. If you count May 30th, Reno is now in their second wettest streak by far. In Tahoe high temps have been averaging 10F below normal for three weeks. Reno will post its first 80F day so far this June today. Sounds great. Sun is shinning and the temps are warm, today, but that will all change again tomorrow.

On Friday the bottom falls out again with a trough approaching the region and an associated cold front. I know this changes dramatically from my last weather post, but whatever, I ain't perfect. So today is the teaser because tomorrow will feature a windy afternoon, and thunderstorms developing. Tahoe should be spared the severe storms due to West winds limiting large formation. North of us in Lassen will be another story. Tahoe should still see a steady rain for a while over night Friday->Saturday as the trough pulls abundant (for this time of year) moisture off the Eastern Pacific into the Sierra. HPC guidance shows up to .52" of water for the West Crest of the Lake Tahoe region between Friday/Saturday. Another shortwave is progged to enter the region Saturday afternoon/night bringing the possibility of more showers. Seems as if this pattern will last through Monday at this point.

All outdoor activities are a go right now. Just watch out for afternoon thunderstorm activity. Sunny to partly cloudy skies and temps near 70F in Truckee and upper 50s @8k.

More rain?

6/16/09 8:20am
Will today be the last day of rain? Might be. We have a good chance for showers and thunderstorms today, although coverage should be less than the last few days. Hard to believe but we are now at three and a half weeks of rain almost everyday. Pretty amazing. There are some in the weather industry that are correlating the rains of this June to the early development of what could be a strong el Nino. Hmmmmm.

West Coast ridge starts to develop Wednesday which will allow for skies to clear and temps to get back to normal. Expect temps to warm each day to near 80F by Friday in Truckee. There is still a slight chance of a thunderstorm Wed/Thurs, but coverage will be isolated. Weekend is looking good with a slight chance of thunderstorms Sunday afternoon as another trough develops and starts to effect the region for early next week.

In case you are interested, it is snowing at Mammoth Mt. this morning. Temp at the summit is 30F and via web cams you can see accumulating snow above mid mountain. They turned the lifts off this past Sunday 6/14.

Looking forward to next winter, the Pacific Ocean is warming.....possible el Nino developing????? The hype is starting.......
